University of Toronto Press, (Toronto, 1973), reprint.

It gives the critic an opportunity to come to grips with the evolution of James's technique from his second short story to his penultimate, unfinished novel, 'The Ivory Tower'...''  6. Manguel, Alberto, ed. (Charles Darwin, R.B. Cunninghame Graham, Thomas Belt, Mark Twain, Henry David Thoreau, Priscilla Wakefield, John James Audubon, Philip Henry Gosse, Grant Allen, Charles Hall, Charles Abbot, Herman Melville, Annie Dillard, et al.)  BY THE LIGHT OF THE GLOW-WORM LAMP: THREE CENTURIES OF RELFECTIONS ON NATURE.
Plenum Trade, New York, 1998, first edition.
373 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0306459914 "(This book) represents the best of the nature-writing genre in over three dozen works from the past three centuries. Echoing the pastoral lyrics of Theocritus and Virgil, nature writing crosses the Middle Ages and Renaissance under changing guises, and comes into its own, first during the Romantic era and then in the nineteenth century when Charles Darwin burst onto the scene. Today, the genre has been revived by a wide and diverse group of imaginative writers - scientists, naturalists, and adventurers among them. Alberto Manguel, a great reader and literary connoisseur, serves as our guide. First outlining a 'literary' history of nature writing, he has organized this anthology into four sections: Landscape, Birds, Beasts, and Insects and Fish. He has included authors who did not train as scientists (D.H. Lawrence and Vladimir Nabokov). There are zoologists (John James Audubon), conservationists (Rachel Carson), the great classic figures (Charles Darwin and J.H. Fabre), and well-known contemporary writers (Diane Ackerman, Annie Dillard, and Barry Lopez). A cornucopia of the marvelous and the earthbound, (it) will take its place alongside the more popular prose anthologies of our time." Minor rubbing, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.  7. Morrison, Helen Barber, ed. (Napoleon Bonaparte, Lord Byron, Charles Burney, Thomas Carlyle, James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Alexandre Dumas, Goethe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Heinrich Heine, Henry James, James Russell Lowell, Macaulay, et al.)  THE GOLDEN AGE OF TRAVEL: LITERARY IMPRESSIONS OF THE GRAND TOUR.
Andrew Melrose, London, 1953, first edition.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps. "....the warmly personal views and comments of a host of famous figures as they journeyed up and down England, Scotland, Italy, France, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Bohemia in the 18th and 19th centuries taking the then fashionable Grand Tour. Here the foremost artists, statesmen and scholars of their day mark, in charming 'off-the-record' moments their pleasures, joys, furies and irritations. Shelley writes about Lake Geneva; Thackeray tells why he was refused a good room in a hotel; William James airs his views on Berlin; Chopin speaks about Edinburgh; Mozart comments on Paris; and Dickens tells a hair-raising story about an ascent of Vesuvius....And, for additional company, there is Voltaire, Beethoven, Henry James, Carlyle, Madame de Stael, R.L. Stevenson, Emerson, Dumas, Robert Burns and many more. This masterly selection has humour in abundance, originality and insight and learning - in short, all the qualities that make good travel-writing durable however much travel may change."  9. Swwetman, John. (FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, First Baron Raglan.)  RAGLAN: FROM THE PENINSULA TO THE CRIMEA.
Arms and Armour, (London, 1993).
384 pp, large 8to (9 1/2'' H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, maps. ''Commisioned into the army in 1804, Lord FitzRoy Somerset began his life of public service in 1807, accompanying Sir Arthur Paget on a diplomatic mission to Turkey. The following year, still only nineteen, he saw military action with Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington), remaining with him throughout the Peninsular War and losing an arm at Waterloo. Two spells in the British Embassy in Paris (1814-15 and 1816-19) were followed by eight years as Secretary to the Master-General of the Ordnance (Wellington) and 25 years as Military Secretary at the Horse Guards. Given the indifferent health of both commanders-in-chief during this period - Hill and Wellington - his influence on the conduct of the British Army was profound. He also served as Master-General of the Ordnance before assuming command of the Expeditionary Force to the Crimea...No full biography of Raglan has yet been written. In redressing this omission, John Sweetman has researched Raglan's surviving military and private papers, extensive contemporary correspondence, official records and reports...'' Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing. NF/VG+
