Defoe, Daniel. Illustrated by Andre Dugo. ROXANA OR THE FORTUNATE MISTRESS. World, Cleveland, 1946. 318 pp, small 8vo (7 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Roxana was indeed a fortunate mistress. Deserted by her wastrel husband, with five small children to support, she embarked on a purple career with gusto and practicality. 'Always the best' might have been her motto, for she became the beloved of Europe's wealthiest and most illustrious men. Paris, London, Venice, Rome - all the glittering meccas of Eighteenth Century society served as backgrounds for her amorous exploits. She lived well, loved luxuriously, and bore countless children until she was well past middle age. And though her end disproved the title 'fortunate', still Roxana accepted calamity with her customary fortitude, and one feels sure that in time she rose to sin again with triumph and magnificence...." Light edge wear, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear, browning to panels, heavy browning to spine, flap-folds and top edges of flaps.
