Using these questions as his point of departure, Babb explores the ritual culture of image-worshiping Svetambar Jains. Jainism is, aside from Buddhism, the only surviving exampl e o f I n d i a's ancient non-Vedic religious traditions. It is known and celebrated for its systematic practice of non-violence and for the rigor of the asceticism it promotes. ISBN 8120813553 "(C)ontains a metrical English rendering of an important Buddhist work in Pali named the 'Sutta-Nipata' with the original text in Romanized version on the opposite page. The Pali Canon, as it has come down to us, is divided into three Pitakas or 'baskets', viz. Vinaya-Pitaka, Sutta-Pitaka and Abhidhamma-Pitaka. The Sutta-Nipata, translated here, contains an ancient, probably the most ancient, part of the Sutta- P i t a k a . It belongs to that portion of the Sutta-Pitaka which is named Khuddaka Nikaya or 'Collection of Short Treatises' as distinct from the four long Nikayas called Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Anguttara. Of the five Vaggas (or 'books') of t he p re se nt Sutta-Nipata the fifth stands out from its fellows by reason of its purposeful unity. While th Uraga, Maha, Cula and Atthaka Vaggas consist each of a collection of independent and unconnected poems (sometimes interspersed with pr ose ) c all ed 'Su tta s', the Parayana aims at a dramatic synthesis. Its prologue and epilogue serve as a setting for the sixteen Questions which elicit Gotama's gradual exposition of the saving 'Way Across'." Faint discoloration on cloth boar ds. Originally written in Tibetan by an unknown Lama not less than three centuries ago, it describes how the birds of the Himalayas met under the leadership of the cuckoo on a holy mountain, and how they were instructed in (the) Buddhist way of living and thinking. Dr. Edward Conze writes about it in the Preface: 'Both language and ideas mark this as a popular book, a piece of folk literature, destined for peasants and nomadic herdsmen. More than many a learned treatise, it conveys to us the emotional overtones of the religion which has r u l e d Tibet for so long, and it gives us some idea of what it feels like to be a Buddhist. The style is simple, straightforward and unsophisticated'." Previous owner's chop mark (stamp) on free front end paper, wrinkles on end papers, areas o f sl ig ht g l ue residue on boards. 846 pp, 9 1/4" H. "This dictionary of more than five thousand words and phrases of the Sacred Language provides a complete, authoritative reference guide to the symbolism and terms of world religions. Every Scripture and every myth is defined with a clarity that defies misunderstanding. And, perhaps even more important, this dictionary treats the definitions of the Scriptures according to the intentions of the original writers. No other book deals as broadly and as completely with religious concepts as literature. And for each term (it) includes: Clear explanations of the symbolism of ancient and modern religious words and phrases; Numerous quotations from authoritative sources; Thoughtful descriptions of the meaning of the terms and how they are used in myth and Scriptures; A complete cross reference. (It) gives lucid and penetrating analyses of all the important terms in the Sacred Language. You will also discover which symbols have double meanings and what they are and how symbols vary from religion to religion, from country to country. Of special value to anyone who is interested in the study of comparative religions are the quotations from authorities on each subject. The discovery of a metaphorical language underlying all sacred Scriptures prompted (the author) to compile this dictionary, which gives a more complete knowledge of man's inner nature and the purpose of his life on earth than was ever before possible. The light shed on the sacred writings and their relationship to mythology will be of great help to clergy and laymen, teachers and students of comparative religion, as well as to anyone who wishes to attain a better understanding of the foundation of the various religions of the world." Shambhala, Boston, 2003, Ist printing.
151 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. "In just 196 short aphorisms, this classic work of Indian philosophy spells out succinctly how the mind works, and how it is possible to use the mind to attain liberation. THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING., Hoff, Benjamin.

Weatherhill, New York, (1981), Ist edition.
86 pp, oblong 16mo (6 1/4" H x 9 1/8" D), hard cover (blue cloth with silver lettering on spine) in dust jacket. 16 color photographs. "These new and extremely creative versions (of the Tao Te Ching) by Benjamin Hoff, accompanied by an introduction to the basics of Taoist philosophy, bring the words of the sage to life once again. The Tao Te Ching, or Tao Virture Classic, concerns the working of Tao, the way or path to life in harmony with natural laws. The Tao Te Ching cautions us to seek wisdom rather than knowledge: 'Along the way to knowledge, many things are accumulated. Along the way to wisdom, many things are discarded'. In just this manner, Benjamin Hoff has succeeded in dispersing the mysteries surrounding this ancient text and in reducing the Taoist philosophy to a straightforward message, ever intriguing but no longer elusive. Such basic principles of Taoism as the uncarved block, the source, and the wu wei are given lucid definition. And in further accordance with the Taoist belief that words are an insufficient vehicle for conveying the meaning of Tao, sixteen color photographs are juxtaposed to selected passages, reflecting their essential truth..."
