Sleeping Bear, Chelsea, MI, 2000, first edition.
207 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1886947937 B&w illustrations. SIGNED ON TITLE PAGE: "JIM BARCLAY". **Underneath the signature are a series of three gift inscriptions in other hands.** "In spite of the fact that he designed 145 courses over a 30-year period, not many golfers outside of Canada know who Stanley Thompson was. They may have heard of Banff, Jasper Park Lodge, St. George's, and Highland Links because these are four of the greatest golf courses i n the world. But it's doubtful that they know who designed them. It was Stanley Thompson. In 1928, legendary golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie - designer of Cypress Point, Augusta National, Royal Melbourne and Crystal Downs, among others - sa id that the golf course at Jasper Park Lodge was the best he'd ever seen. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. got his start with Thompson in 1930, and went on to become perhaps the greatest course designer ever. He said Thompson was one of the giants of h i s p rof e ssion. Everyone who knew him said he was larger than life. He loved cigars, 15-ounce steaks, and whiskey. He is said to have made three separate fortunes and lost each one. He liked to wear fedoras and three-piece suits with a watch ch ain hook ed into his vest pockets. Under his arm he would carry a briefcase, in his hand a cane. While building a course in Minnesota in 1951, a newspaper reporter described him as 'a fabulous little gentleman with a red face and spike-pointed ca ne s eat'. H e and his brothers were also some of the best golfers that Canada has ever known. Jim Barclay's biography of Stanley Thompson is a tribute to one of golf's all-time great architects and great characters." 144 pp, oblong (8 9/16" H x 10 1/16" D. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Rodeo is perhaps the world's greatest test of physical endurance and raw heroism. It is the participant, the cowboy, who has excited both young and old for decades. Year in and year out, these men test their strength against the power of animals in such rodeo events as steer wrestling and bronc riding. Sometimes they are rewarded for their efforts by a winning time, but often they receive little more than the appreciative applause of an enthusiastic audience before heading down the road to the next rodeo. What motivates these men to keep up such a grueling schedule? What has kept the tradition alive for so long? Through the combined effort of a gifted writer and an expert photographer, the exciting and entertaining world of the rodeo cowboy comes alive." Minor edge wear. 269 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on dark blue front free endpaper in silver ink: "To ____ / Happy Birthday! / All the Best / Bobby Baun / #21"."(It) was Baun's winning goal in overtime of game six of the 1964 Stanley Cup finals that made him a legend. Carried off the ice on a stretcher in the third period with what would later be determined to be a fractured leg, Baun insisted on returning to the game, giving new meaning to the words determination and courage. His rock-solid will helped send the Leafs on the road to their third consecutive Cup. How Baun broke his leg and the sequence of events leading up to his famous goal have been inaccureately reported for over thirty-five years. Now, for the first time in print, Baun tells us exactly how his leg was broken, and how he courageously came back onto the ice and launched himself into Stanley Cup history. (Baun) tells us what it was like to play on a team run by Punch Imlach, and how he played defence against such greats as Rocket Richard, Jean Beliveau, Gordie Howe, and Bobby Hull. And he shares his favourite memories from the dressing rooms and training camps, incuding Tim Horton's legendary antics and stories of fellow Leafs Eddie Shack and Billy Harris. (A) close, personal look at the game in the Original Six era and the men who played it." 12 Childerhose, R.J. WINTER RACEHORSE.
Peter Martin, (Toronto, 1968), Ist edition.
430 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. A fictionalized, but carefully researched novel about hockey in the N.H.L. "...packed with breathless ice-level hockey action. Readers can feel the gummy, August practice ice clogging their skates, hear the roar of the crowd, see the open corner of the net as the goalie guesses wrong, smell the exhaustion of the dressing room after the game. But 'Winter Racehorse' is more than this. More than the story of a rookie super-star. More than an insider's look at hockey action. It's also an angry, impassioned attack on violence in hockey, on the bone-crunching, blood-spilling mayhem that owners and coaches think the fans enjoy but that true sportmen know can ruin a game. (This book ) doesn't preach. But the shocking message is there for readers to find in the midst of the action, the breathless excitement of hockey-played-for-keeps..." 352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771023340 B&w photographs. "Toller Cranston is: six-time Canadian figure-skating champion, celebrity, costume designer, artist extraordinaire, broadcaster, choreographer of skating ro utines, raconteur, bon vivant, coach, world traveller, art collector, legend and enigma. In 1976 he won Olympic bronze (so why did it feel like defeat?). This book tells the story of his life after those fateful games at Innsbruck. The r i s e a n d f all of Toller's first professional ice show is described in soul-searing detail. His subsequent triumphant tour of Europe as the Skater of the Century is recounted, in contrast, with wicked humour. There are vignettes here of his e nc ou nt e rs w it h t he rich and famous from Leonard Bernstein to Pierre Cardin and of his life among Europe's aristocrats and bohemians. Toller has experienced the high life and the low. He has stayed in the most luxurious hotels, held court in pal ati al ho use s, so ugh t seclusion in beautiful estates. But the hard times took their toll. In the early 1990s a combination of circumstances, including a disatrous professional association with out-of-control American skater Christopher Bo wman and a laws uit tha t d ragg ed on for years (ending in complete victory for Toller), led to a personal crisis from which recovery came slowly. But even in the blackest hours, Toller's humour and creative powers never deserted e xtra ordin ary s elf -port rait wri tten by a uniquely gifted individual. Toller's wit, insight, and delicious way with words will entertain and astound readers whether they are skating fans or not." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling. Near Fine/N ear Fi ne

Key Porter, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781554700417 "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (He) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto- centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1989 0139206469 / 9780139206467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
334 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "If the Montreal Canadiens had a weakness in the early 1960s it was size. Too often, small Canadiens were being battered against the boards and checked out of action. In 1963, that problem was solved, and a big part of the solutions was John Ferguson. Chosen out of the American Hockey Leauge by Frank Selke, Ferguson showed up in training camp with a reputation as a good hockey player, and one who hadn't lost a fight in the AHL. He lived up to his reputation during his first game in Boston. At the opening faceoff, he got into a fight with Ted Green, which he won. Not only that, Ferguson proceeded to score twice in that game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. John Ferguson played for the Canadiens for eight years, until he retired in 1971. During those years, he shared in five Stanley Cups, played five hundred games, scored 145 goals and 158 assists, and spent 1214 minutes in the penalty box. An extremely aggressive forward, he acted as the club's policeman and extended his dislike of opposing players off the ice. Ferguson retired from the Canadiens in 1971 to begin a new career as a businessman. He came back to hockey as Coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers in 1976, then as General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and finally as General Manager of Team Canada. Having retired once more from hockey, (he) will dedicate himself to his second great sporting love, as President of The Windsor Raceway."
