THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
2 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

THE USES OF ENCHANTMENT: THE MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF FAIRY TALES., Bettelheim, Bruno.
3 Bettelheim, Bruno. THE USES OF ENCHANTMENT: THE MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF FAIRY TALES.
New York Alfred A. Knopf 1991 0394497716 / 9780394497716 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
328 pp + index, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "Carrying us back into magical landscapes, recovering for us - and profoundly validating - the enchantment and wonder we long ago experienced, the great child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim gives us his most universally enriching work: a brilliant and moving revelatiion of the irreplaceable importance of fairy tales - how they educate, support, and liberate the emotions of children. First, with an illuminative power that startles and delights, (he) opens up to us the real content of the great fairy tales. How, beneath their surface shimmer of palaces and princesses, fairies and witches, wishes and spells, they deal in the profoundest ways with the emotional turmoils of childhood: the feelings of smallness and helplessness, with the terrifying perceptions of outward dangers, with the even more terrifying anxieties the child feels possessed by, with the mystery of the World Outside, and of the Stranger, with the child's deepest questions about self and about the future. Next we see 'how' fairy tales, which all cultures through the ages have depended on for instructing and sustaining their young, help children cope with their emotions and their world and how they reveal the child, subconsciously, to him- or herself. Then, examining the stories one by one (from Cinderella and The Sleeping Beauty to Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, The Three Bears, jack and the Beanstalk, and many others), Dr. Bettelheim shows specifically how they work to support and free the child. This is how, wandering in enchanted worlds, children begin to sense for themselves the textures of justice, fidelity, love, courage -- not as lessons imposed, but as discovery, as experience, as an organic part of the adventure of living. (He) persuades us to bring the great fairy tales back to our young as a priceless source of esthetic pleasure and emotional sustenance. Hi book is essential reading for everyone who cares about literature and myth, for all who were reared on fairy tales, and for all who were deprived of them." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few very small light areas of discoloration on top of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

6 Castaneda, Carlos. Foreword by Walter Goldschmidt. THE TEACHINGS OF DON JUAN: A YAQUI WAY OF KNOWLEDGE.

"(F)irst introduces to the reader the elusive, magical, powerful, haunting and perplexing person of Don Juan, the Yaqui brujo, or sorcerer, whose apprentice Castaneda becomes. Their relationship - in which a reluctant and demanding Don Juan instructs Castaneda in the disciplines of becoming a 'man of knowledge' by means of a series of mystical experiences and deceptively simple parables - has been described (by Time magazine) as 'one of the most fortunate literary encounters since Boswell was introduced to Dr. Johnston.' (This book) is nothing less than a revlation, a startling and illuminating journey into a world of 'nonordinary reality' that is not just the record of a remarkable and unprecedented inititation, but a glimpse of a new way of spiritual knowledge, comparable in its complexity, its subtle perceptions of human nature, its pragmatic system of ethics, to the great religions of the East - yet rooted in the forgotten culture of (North America). Above all, (it) cannot fail to leave the reader with the strongest impression of the nobility, depth and authority of Don Juan and his teachings." FROM RELIGION TO PHILOSOPHY: A STUDY IN THE ORIGINS OF WESTERN SPECULATION., Cornford, F.M. Foreword by Robert Ackerman.
8 Cornford, F.M. Foreword by Robert Ackerman. FROM RELIGION TO PHILOSOPHY: A STUDY IN THE ORIGINS OF WESTERN SPECULATION.
Princeton, New Jersey Princeton University Press 1991 0691020760 / 9780691020761 Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8 7/16" H. "In this exploration of the 'very first utterance of philosophers', F.M. Cornford showed that the remarkable burst of abstract speculation among pre-Socratic thinkers of the sixth century B.C. emerged directly from the religious thoughts of the preceding era in Greece. Combining profound classical scholarship with striking anthropological and sociological insight, Cornford rejected the post-Darwinian rationalist assumption that religion and philosophy are fundamentally different from each other. His book supplies a needed reminder of the intricate connections between critical scientific thought and social and emotional experience. Classicists, historians of religion, students of ancient history, and everyone concerned with the subject of myth will find this lucid and highly original work to be a source of rich insights about the organic nature and continuity of Western thought." 12 Farmer, Penelope, ed. SISTERS: AN ANTHOLOGY.
London Allen Lane / Penguin Press 1999 0713993022 / 9780713993028 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
454 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). "As one of three sisters herself, Penelope Farmer sets her exploration of sisterhood in an autobiographical framework, describing loving and not so loving sisters in the past and present generations on all sides of her family. With the help of writers in many fields and over many centuries, she guides us through the peaks and troughs of sistery love, both between sisters and between sisters and brothers - from childhood, separation, love, marriage and parenthood, to old age and death itself. Famous literary sisters appear: the Brontes; Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell; the Mitfords; Mary Lamb and brother Charles; Vera Brittain. Alongside them the theatrical and musical ones: Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland; Maria Callas and her sister; Jacqueline du Pre and hers; Mozart and his sister. Then there are the well-known fictional sisters: the March sisters; Dorothea and Celia Brooke; the Schlegel sisters; Ursula and Gudrun from 'Women in Love'. And many not so well-known sisters, both fictional and non-fictional besides. We observe the sisterly bonds of bees, lions, elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. We are guided by Richard Dawkins through the genetics of ant colonies. And, throughout, we are asked to reflect on the nature of sisterhood itself. Is a sister born not made? What is the essence of the sisterly bond? What relationship does that bond have to the myth of sisterhood constructed around it? - a myth leading to all those symbolic sisterhoods, of nurses, nuns, feminists and so forth, a section on whom concludes the book. Through poetry, prose, autobiography, memoir, science and anthroplogy , Penelope Farmer pieces together the world of sisters and sisterhood, creating a rich tapestry of evocative and often moving writing that will find echoes in the experience of all who have or are sisters, or even just those who would like to have had them." Slight bump to top/bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, tiny dint on spine.

This book is more than the ecumenical discuss-ion of sex-related issues from a minister's point of view; it is a candid commentary on our time - a time of sexual revolution and human turmoil when old values are questioned and new answers must be found. By analyzing the historical and social aspects of sex, sexuality and sexism and the role of the clergy within the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the author has woven his thoughts into a colorful fabric; his wisdom, wit and candor, combined with his superb literary skills, shine through on every page. The autobiographical data and references are an added bonus, providing insight into the nature of this visionary philosopher and lover of humankind. 307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, he found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories. (This book) draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top 'mental athletes', Foer learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, he discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. THE SENSE OF ORDER: A STUDY IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DECORATIVE ART., Gombrich, E.H.
19 Gombrich, E.H. THE SENSE OF ORDER: A STUDY IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DECORATIVE ART.
Oxford Phaidon 1980 0714817325 / 9780714817323 Second Impression. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
411 pp, 10 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "After an Introduction on Order and Purpose in Nature, which offers a novel approach to the study of pattern, the first chapters deal with the criticism of ornament, the cult of simplicity and the debates about design in Victorian England, in which such eminent critics as Ruskin, Owen Jones and Gottfried Semper made a permanent contribution to theoretical issues. The craftsman's practice of pattern-making is studied as a response to the challenges of material, of geometrical laws and psychological constraints, after which the author examines the perception and the effects of visual orders in the light of recent research. The relation-ship between psychology and history is the theme of four final chapters which deal with the tenacity of ornamental traditions, their modification by the changing styles and fashions of different periods, the role of symbolism in the origin and the use of motifs, and the psychological roots of the grotesque, oscillating between magic and humour. An Epilogue reviews some of the analogies between the spatial orders of decorative design and the temporal patterns of the dance, of poetry and, notably, of music, not forgetting the 'kinetic art' of our century. This absorbing work, the fruit of a lifetime's interest in the most universal and yet strangely neglected manifestation of human creativity, is based on the Wrightsman Lectures given by the author in 1970 under the auspices of the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University." Very minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, one tiny tear archivally taped.

20 Greenway, John L. THE GOLDEN HORNS: MYTHIC IMAGINATION AND THE NORDIC PAST.
Athens University of Georgia Press 1977 0820303844 / 9780820303840 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
226 pp, 9 5/16" H. "As an introduction to modern myth, (this book) masterfully encompasses a wide circle of historical and literary materials. John Greenway examines first the nature of time in the mythic consciousness, then the role of the Nordic past as a myth of origins from the Renaissance through the romantics. Only in the various forms of myth can man find identity, the author argues, and he sees the varying images of the Viking past as unconscious attempts by northern nations to legitimize their own values. Central to (his) methodology is his discussion of the sacred in language not itself sacred and the failure of modern myth to make the primitive distinction between the sacred and the profane. The author establishes the theoretical base of his discussion by examining the nature of time in mythic consciousness in terms of Norse myth. After suggesting several ways in which the mythic apprehension of reality conditioned medieval Icelandic narrative, (he) elaborates on the dialectical relationship between myth and reason, using as an example the conversion of the Germanic tribes to Christianity. Maintaining that myth is neither true nor false but always either expressive or not, Greenway traces the origin, rise, and fall of two great modern myths of northern birth: Swedish Gothicism in the seventeenth century and the Ossianic craze of the eighteenth. Both myths, one social, the other literary, illustrate the singular tension in the modern mind between mythic imperatives and the impulse to de-mythologize. Finally, 'The Golden Horns' traces the romantic belief in a 'new mythology' which synthesizes myth and reason from its early acceptance through its eventual repudiation. In his conclusions about the state of myth in the modern world, Greenway postulates that we have inherited the romantic respect for myth as truth but lack the romantic faith in transcendence necessary to establish myth's reality. We are trapped in a physical and moral world which we, as romantics, recognize to be symbolic in its representations, but we lack a belief in the transcendental reality of these symbols."
