Macmillan, London, 1977, first edition.
232 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333198670 B&w illustrations. "Years of detailed research into Celtic and Arthurian history have brought Geoffrey Ashe face to face with wider mysteries and conundrums that go to the heart of human civilisation. This book is a quest for an original and universal knowledge - the Ancient Wisdom - nutured by priests, shamans and occultists, claimed by scientists and historians since earliest times. Dissatisfied with theories of l ost Atlantis or alien astronauts bequeathing our cultural heritage, Geoffrey Ashe is still convinced that the Ancient Wisdom is not just a legend. But what is it? Is it still at work? In the tradition of Robert Graves and his search for t h e W h i t e Goddess, he investigates the puzzles of ancient mythology and religions. From the magical lore of numbers he unearths the clue that leads from the world of the Middle East and the Mediterranean to the mountain fastnesses of Siberi a - an d d ev as ta ti ng confirmation of the Ancient Wisdom's existence." 4 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Penguin 1995 0140247165 / 9780140247169 Soft Cover Very Good+
337 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs, map, family tree. "In July 1944 a group of conspirators known as Secret Germany attempted to kill Hitler. The mastermind of the conspiracy was Count Claus von Stauffenberg. Who was this charismatic, dashing aristocrat, who was said to be the only man to stare the Fuhrer down? What were the secret teachings that inspired him to the audacious act of assassination? Forty-six serious but failed attempts on Hitler's life in twenty years reflect a strong anti-Nazi movement in Germany. For Stauffenberg, the bomb plot organized by his esoteric circle was more a moral and spiritual necessity than an act of political expediency. Had he succeeded, he might have become the saviour of the national soul. In this remarkable investigation (the authors) explain how Stauffenberg represents a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In his courage and integrity he stands as an atonement for the barbarism of the Third Reich." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

5 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Jonathan Cape 1994 0224035258 / 9780224035255 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
337 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "At thirty-seven, Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg, Chief of Staff of the Reich Reserve Army, was a charismatic figure destined for supreme command. The group of conspirators with whom he conceived the plot to kill Hitler in July 1944 was called 'Secret Germany'. That was also the name of the esoteric circle in which Stauffenberg as a young man had been a disciple of the mystic anti-Nazi magus and poet Stefan George. What was it that motivated this extraordinary aristocratic soldier, with the looks of a Hollywood idol, who was said to be only man to stare the Fuhrer down until he averted his eyes? For Stauffenberg the bomb plot was not a political move but a moral and spiritual necessity. After forty-two serious attempts on Hitler's life in the previous twenty years, why did he too fail? Had he succeeded, some say he would have become the de Gaulle of Germany, saviour of the national soul. Even in failure, there can be no doubt of Stauffenberg's heroism. He stands as an atonement for the Third Reich and a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In this remarkable investigation his whole life explains a troubled past to the present generation of Europeans as few have done in recent history." Tiny crease at bottom corner of pages 83 to 100. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny dint on rear hinge, very light rubbing .

7 Beck, L. Adams. (E. Barrington). Aka Elizabeth Louisa 'Lily' Moresby. THE WAY OF STARS: A ROMANCE OF REINCARNATION.
New York Sun DIAL 1940 Reprint Hard Cover Good+ Fair
408 pp, 7 3/4" H. Bright orange cloth with decorative black title block on spine, top edge orange. "When they broke into the inner chamber of the tomb, the first thing they saw was a throne of yellowed ivory poised on lion's legs and claws of gold. On it sat a figure, a figure of some queen of ancient Egypt, her youth and breath-taking beauty preserved for centuries in the sealed silence of the vault. Suddenly a thin shaft of sunlight trickled in through the blackness and the beautiful image vanished, disintegrated before their eyes into a small pile of dust. The miraculously preserved body was gone, but in the incredible, turbulent weeks that followed Miles Seton could never lose the memory of that marble-white face, the deep repose of the features and the faint, faint smile which touched the mouth - . Shifting from the musty, century-laden atmosphere of an Egyptian tomb to the garish, colorful atmos-phere of modern India this fascinating novel tells the strange story of a love that defied time and space itself, the story of a queen of prehistoric Egypt brought to life in the twentieth century. (The author) has a deep understanding of oriental mysticism and this engrossing story provides a vivid picture of Indian philosophy and thought with all its mystic beauty and curious logic. (This) is indeed a skillful, exciting blending of the spiritual and the material." Book is slightly cocked, has previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper, small label from bookstore on front pastedown, light browning to endpapers, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor color fading on top of text block. 414 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Realizing from mediaeval documents that the initial Nova Scotia refuge of A.D. 1398 must have harboured many Grail believers, and that the secret colony must have expanded, Bradley began to trace evidence of Grail Knights from Nova Scotia, through New Brunswick to the St. Lawrence River, and on to the Great Lakes as far as Niagara, New York State, and central Pennsylvania. Evidence of their presence has been uncovered on both the Canadian and American sides of this great waterway. Bradley poses compelling questions about his discoveries, and offers plausible and provocative answers as we travel with him and his companions (both academic and amateur) along the trail of the 'Grail Knights of North America'." THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
10 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

Chicago Contemporary Books 1993 0809238047 / 9780809238040 First Edition Soft Cover Good+
221 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Throughout history and continuing to this day, occurrences have been reported that are so extraordinary there seem to be no possible natural explanations. Yet the credibility of the witnesses - often including thousands who have simultaneously observed the same mysterious event - and the consistency of these events across centuries of time and disparate parts of the earth indicate that they cannot be easily dismissed. (P)opular writer and aeronautics expert Martin Caidin reviews some of the most fascinating of these observations. Among the phenomena he discusses are: Careful tests by scientists showing that some people really can control objects at at distance; Reports from Vietnam combat marines of huge, glowing yellow 'semi-humans' impervious to machine-gun fire; Testimony from several different teams of Soviet cosmonauts citing encounters with 'giant angels'; Documented reports of people using divining rods to find rich deposits of ore, oil, and underground water sources that had gone undetected by scientific instruments; UFO sightings noted throughout recorded history - and their incredibly consistent similarity over three thousand years and many lands." 395 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)ells the story of a journey in the strange world of alleged apparitions, prophecies, miracles of healing, levitation, holy relics, weeping statues, stigmata and demonic possession. Cornwell follows the trail through Yugoslavia, Ireland, Spain, the United States, Canada, Italy and Britain, in search of proof of divine, or diabolical, intervention. He encounters the teenage Marian visionaries of Medjugorje, Sister Briege McKenna, the healing nun, and the ghostly influence of the stigmatic Padre Pio. He investigates the Shroud of Turin, the liquefaction of the blood of St Januarius in Naples, a Eucharistic miracle in the Bronx and a weeping plaque of the Virgin in Sicily. He describes a curious and sometimes sinister landscape inhabited by prophets, saints, charismatic political leaders and exorcists, and finds himself in conversation with Graham Greene, Professor A.J. Ayer and the distinguished Jesuit philosopher Father Frederick Copleston. Cornwell's journey culminates in an imaginative and original perspective that demonstrates the moral and spiritual benefits of popular mystical phenomena, while redeeming them from scientific debunking and fundamentalist literalism." People have always held witches in awe and feared them at the same tim e. Witches were the first doctors and the first spiritual advisers and still maintain these roles in primitive societies. (The au th or ) has written a fascinating history of witches.
