ISBN 0385257252 "The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the tumultuous ye ars of the (20th) century's first half like bookends on the shelf of history. They have a good deal in common, these two minor conflicts, whose chronicles pale when compared to the bloodbaths of the two world wars. Canada's wartime days a r e l o n g p ast, and for many, the scars of war have healed. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadia n bl o od . N ow a da ys, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of the international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process. In this monumental work , Pie rr e B er ton br in gs Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals a t th e f ront , a nd t he p oli tic ians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, 'Marching as t o W ar' d escr ibes how the e xperi ence of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationshi p wi th the Unit ed St ates ." CATEGORICALLY INCORRECT: ETHICAL FALLACIES IN CANADA'S WAR ON TERROR., Borovoy, A. Alan.
14 Borovoy, A. Alan. CATEGORICALLY INCORRECT: ETHICAL FALLACIES IN CANADA'S WAR ON TERROR.
Dundurn, Toronto, 2006, first edition.
205 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1550026283 "If humanity has learned anything from the horrors of the past century, it is that our one hope is democracy. The goals of Canada's actions at home and abroad should be the preservation of democracy. Thi s is the lens through which our policies should be discerned, dissected and amended. (The author) argues that Canada has pursued an ethically and categorically incorrect war against terror. We have been needlessly dovish abroad and excessive l y h a w kish at home. In order to use military force abroad, the government fussed over the need for United Nations approval. At home, however, there are no such restraints; without even asking a court, the government may effectively deprive ce rt ai n p eo pl e of the right to make a living. As (he) summarizes: 'Internationally, key fallacies stem from an undue respect for a rule of law that does not exist. Domestically, key fallacies stem from an undue neglect of a rule of law that do es exi st ." In ter ior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine

STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY., Brewin, Andrew.
18 Brewin, Andrew. STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1965, first edition.
140 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In today's nuclear era, in a world now spending roughly $120 billion annually preparing for war, all other questions fade into insignificance in comparison with the problem of preventing conflict. Yet in this race toward annihilation Canada, with a limited budget and modest military strength, could carve for herself a new, significant and perhaps decisive role, if her military and political leaders could set aside tradition-bound c o n c e p t s , concentrating instead on the unique position Canada can hold on a world scale. Penetrating to the heart of our 'defence muddle', stripping away the military jargon that surrounds military discussions, Mr. Brewin traces Canada's m il it ar y ro le s in ce the formation of NATO in 1949, shows why the United States' concept of 'massive retaliation' has lost all practical meaning, and urges Canada to divorce herself from policies which are obsolete, provocative, and meaningles s. Sp eak in g a s o ne of the political leaders whose thoughts may play a major role in shaping this country's defence policies in the future, he outlines with persuasive clarity the factors which make it imperative for Canada to abandon tactical nu clea r we apo ns a nd c onc ent rate on developing a compact, efficient, highly mobile non-nuclear fighting force capable of tackling 'brushfire wars' anywhere in the world." Slight bump at bottom of front hinge/spine, minor wrinkle at top of spin e, ti ny di nt o n bot tom o f re ar b oard. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling; light browning/foxing on flap-folds, spine and parts of panels; light rubbing; very small color scuff on rear hinge; two tiny tears - one with creases. 19 Brock, Jeffry V. WITH MANY VOICES. VOLUME I: THE DARK BROAD SEAS & VOLUME II: THE THUNDER AND THE SUNSHINE. MEMOIRS OF A SAILOR. 2 VOLUME SET.

275 pp, 384 pp, 9 1/4" H - 2 volume set. 'The Dark Broad Seas' - ISBN 0771016239- published 1981. 'The Thunder and the Sunshine' - ISBN 0771016255 - published 1983. B&w frontispiece in Volume I. The autobiography of Rear Admiral Jeffry V. Brock. In volume I he "describes his experiences as a commander of escort groups in the U-boat ridden Atlantic of World War II. Woven through the high adventure of combat are encounters with colourful political and military figures, and the feisty people of Britain. In 1950, Brock was appointed to command the Canadian naval forces sent to Korea. His meetings with General MacArthur are frankly recounted and give a unique view of this larger-than-life figure, and his handling of the Korean conflict." In volume II, "Brock writes of his time on the Directing Staff of the National Defence College of Canada and of fascinating overseas tours. He recalls meeting eminent personages of his day, such as Lord Louis Montbatten and Field Marshal Mont-gomery. He describes four interest-filled years in London as Naval Adviser to the High Commissioner and as Canada's naval representative in Europe. He returned to Canada in 1957, and a few years later was promoted to Rear Admiral. While serving as Vice Chief of Naval Staff in Ottawa, he sensed the distant rumblings of a new confrontation - a confrontation that spelled the end of the R.C.N. as men of Brock's era knew it. Paul Hellyer, the newly appointed Minister of Defence, was steering the federal government toward a plan for the unification of Canada's armed services. Brock, in this hard-hitting, brutally honest section of his memoirs, breaks his two-decade silence with an account of the bureau-cratic engineering which culminated in his forced retirement and the dismissal of a great many loyal officers of senior rank." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spines, minor soiling on top edge of text block of vol. I, tiny dent on bottom of text block of vol. II. Dust jackets have light to moderate edge wear, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, vol. II is sprice-clipped.
