A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AFRICA AND AUSTRALASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 662., Bartholomew, J.G.
1 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AFRICA AND AUSTRALASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 662.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
218 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers and decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "The extent of the land and sea that (this book) covers, between the extremes of Algiers and Samoa, is immense in latitude and longitude; while in points of history it ranges from the oldest to the newest civilisation; as suggested by Karnak, or the new capital of Australia, Canbena (sic). Moreover, in accord with the general idea of these map-books, the effect of the map in illustrating history, the growth and multiplicity of peoples and cities, and the vast possibilities of unworked regions, is kept in sight throughout these pages. The record includes the wars that have passed, from Napoleon's Campain in Egypt of 1798 and General Gordon's last stand at Khartoum, to the battles of Spion Kop and Colenso, and the sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking in the late South African War. It covers the routes of the great travellers, Mungo Park, Livingstone and Stanley; Stuart, Burke and Wills; and it touches at Vailima in order to recall Robert Louis Stevenson and his South Sea experiences, at the end of his days, as they are pictured by his Samoa book of 1892..." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of Africa and Australasia" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Africa and Australasia having a Literary or Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, minor edge wear - tiny tear at top of spine, minor bumps at bottom edge of front cover, book lightly cracked in several places - book is sound, small split and very small piece missing at bottom of inside rear gutter, slight scattered color loss on top of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, small tear at top of spine.

A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
2 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. "(T)his book attempts to cover the geography of Europe, mapped out not only to define the frontiers and countries, but to illustrate history and literature - especially English literature. The changes in the face of Europe that have marked the growth of nations, that went on through the Middle Ages, and have continued to the time of Wellington and Napoleon, the Franco-Prussian War, and to the merging to-day of the military in the industrial struggle, may be followed in the coloured maps which come first in the volume." A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553., Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee.
4 Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1930 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Good Very Good
242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in America having a Literary or Historic Interest", "Contributions to the Literature of the United States" and an Index. Book is lightly cocked, light browning to edges of text block, light edge wear, very small old ink mark on bottom of text block, rubbing with slight color loss on covers, cloth is split on hinges - repaired, small edge tear on free front endaper - archivally taped. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny chip at top of spine, slight fading to spine and flap-fold color.

THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK: THE BATTLE FOR JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES., Birmingham, Kevin. (James Joyce.)
5 Birmingham, Kevin. (James Joyce.) THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK: THE BATTLE FOR JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES.
New York Penguin 2014 1594203369 / 9781594203367 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
417 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "For more than a decade, the book that literary critics now consider the most important novel in the English language was illegal to own, sell, advertise or purchase in most of the English-speaking world. James Joyce's big blue book, 'Ulysses', ushered in the modernist era and changed the novel for all time. But the genius of 'Ulysses' was also its danger: it omitted absolutely nothing. All of the minutiae of Leopold Bloom's day, including its unspeakable details, unfold with careful precision in its pages. The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice immediately banned the novel as 'obscene, lewd, and lascivious'. Joyce, along with some of the most important publishers and writers of his era, had to fight for years to win the freedom to publish it. (This book) tells the remarkable story surrounding 'Ulysses', from the first stirrings of Joyce's inspiration in 1904 to its landmark federal obscenity trial in 1933." Several soft wrinkles/indentations on free front endpaper - migrate slightly into two other pages, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very tiny tear at bottom of spine, minor edge wrinkling.

"Although Bissell focuses on (Ernest) Buckler the man, the book also includes passages of extended critical analysis of Buckler's work. it describes the long apprenticeship of the writer before his sudden emergence as a major figure in 1952 with the publication of 'The Mountain and the Valley'. Bissell shows how a central theme binds together the major books - the memory of a childhood paradisal world that time could never corrupt." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE., Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas.
11 Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas. OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1973.
489 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. "These three works, displaying marked differences in purpose, tone, and effect, are all classics of Canadian literary and cultural criticism. John George Bourinot was a man of letters, an Imperialist, and a bic ulturalist, who was confident of his knowledge of the Canadian identity and felt it to be his public mission to align reality with his own personal vision. Writing in 1893 to the elite represented by the members of the Royal Society, he d e s c r i b e d h is work as 'a monograph on the intellectual development of the Dominion', describing 'the progress of culture in a country still struggling with the difficulties of the material development of half a continent'. Two decades later , Th om as G ut hr ie Ma rquis and Camille Roy wrote what were, in contrast, specialized assignments, contributions to the compendium history, 'Canada and Its Provinces' (1913). Addressing a far larger audience, and treating a vastly enlarged bod y of Can adi an lit era tur e , t heir work comes much closer to contemporary scholarship, with greater clarity, organization, and sheer bulk of information, but with the loss of some of the charm and assurance of Bourinot's wide sweep. In further co ntr ast to B our inot 's d eter mi ned biculturalism and will to unity, Roy and Marquis' essays display vivid differences in the emotional allegiances and convictions of the founding cultures. Marquis starts by asking the question, 'Has Canada a vo ice of h er ow n in lite ratur e dis tin ct f rom that of England?'; Roy treats French-Canadian literature in its Roman Catholic contexts." Interior - one small dog-ear crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - l ight to m oderat e bro wning, light brown ing on sp ine and on rear cover, light browning on top of textblock. Very Good-

First edition dust jacket with no price on flap (designed so each receiving country could price the book according to their currency). Frontispiece reproduction of short letter by Tolkien. "Over the years (Tolkien) wrote, to his publishers, to members of his family, to friends, and to 'fans' of his books, a mass of letters which often reveal the inner workings of his mind, and which record the history of composition of many of his stories. The selection from Tolkien's correspondence which is here published presents, in (his) own words, a highly detailed portrait of the man in his many aspects: story-teller, scholar, Catholic, parent of a large family, and observer of the world around him. Enthusiasts for his writings will find much that is new to delight and excite them, for the letters not only include fresh information about Middle-earth and its inhabitants but also many analyses by Tolkien himself of the meanings of his stories. Besides this, the book will entertain anyone who appreciates the art of letter-writing, of which Tolkien was a master." BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE., Castronovo, David.
17 Castronovo, David. BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE.
Continuum, New York, 2009.
197 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9780826428325 "They came from unpromising places and unglamorous backgrounds. They crashed the Establishment party in one generation, raided the citadels of culture, and brought their idioms, themes, and passions to the center of British life. The blokes were writers who revitalized British drama, fiction, poetry, and criticism. This book is the story, told in a series of profiles, of New Britannia. The cast of characters includes playwrights John Osborne and Arnold Wesker, novelist Kingsley Amis, critic Kenneth Tynan, poet Philip Larkin, fiction writer Alan Sillitoe, plus lesser-known figures such as John Braine, David Storey, Stan Barstow, and Keith Waterhouse - up to more contemporary writers like Martin Amis and Nick Hornby. The central idea of this book is how these writers, and others, transformed British heritage - how they worked with the materials of their own backgrounds, the class system, tradition, and artistic convention to make new art. They took their place in a long line of writers who thrived on grit: Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence. (It) is an entertaining and insightful survey of a group of disparate writers who had a profound and enduring impact upon British literary culture." Very light rubbing on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good
