This time it was right, it would work, and no-one would have to get nailed to anything. Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it the Earth was unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace by-pass, and so the idea was lost forever. This is not her story - . (Well at) least partly - . Another Fine Myth - 200 pp, 1984 3rd printing, ISBN 0441023606 - "Skeeve was a magician's apprentice, until an assassin hired by an ancient enemy struck and his master was dead. Skeeve suddenly found himself alone with Aahz, a purple-tongued demon the old magician had summoned from another dimension as a practical joke just before he was killed. Aahz had lost his powers, Skeeve had lost his job. So together, they set out through a universe populated by Deveels (or devils), Imps, dragons, unicorns and more, looking for a way to get even." 2. Myth Conceptions - 217 pp, 1986 5th printing, ISBN 0441555209 - "Skeeve was summoned to the court of Roderick the Fifth of Possiltum to audition for the position of Court Magician. Unfortunately for everyone, he got the job. How was Aahz going to help Skeeve defend a kindgom against the mightiest invading army in the world? With his pet dragon Gleep and bewitching green-haired Tanda standing by, Skeeve waited for Aahz to come up with a solution. The problem was, if they won they would be executed - and if they lost they would be killed. What kind of magik could beat those odds?" 3. Myth Directions - 202 pp, 1985 1st printing, ISBN 044155525X - "The Trophy was unique, no question. It was easily the ugliest object Skeeve had ever seen in any dimension. And before landing his job as Court Magician, young Skeeve had seen a thing or two. But Tanda wanted it - and, as a rule, whatever the beautiful Tanda wants, Tanda gets. The problem is, getting it will take more than luck. It will take all the talents of a young but gifted magician, a scaley but canny Pervect, and a charming demon not above a little interdimensional thievery." 4. Hit or Myth - 170 pp, 1985 4th printing, ISBN 0441338518 - "King Roderick takes a powder - leaving Skeeve in his place to marry his homicidal fiancee Hemlock and face the tender mercies of Bruce, the Mob's fairy godfather who wants Skeeve working for him - or not at all. On top of that, Aahz has taken a forced vacation, a two-ton demon has a crush of Skeeve, and both Possiltum and Deva are about to be invaded." 5. Mything Persons - 172 pp, 1987 2nd printing, ISBN 0441552765 - "(Skeeve's) partner Aahz has disappeared and it looks like foul play. Finding Aahz ought to be a snap for a talented magician like Skeeve, especially with a sassy apprentice and a dumb but brawny bodyguard along for the ride. The trouble is, they're sleuthing in another dimension: a strange and chilly realm where day is night and humans are considered monsters. Add a murder rap, a couple of vampires, and the fact that magic doesn't work here, and you've got a trio in real hot water!" 6. Little Myth Marker - 167 pp, 1987 1st printing, ISBN 0441484999 - "(Skeeve) bluffs his way into a high-stakes game of dragon poker and, by some miracle, wins. Then, still flush with luck, (he) heads straight for the king of dragon poker, the Sen-Sen Ante Kid. And with a pot of half a million, there'd better not be any myth-deals. But even if Skeeve can hold his own in a high-stakes game, there's still Markie. Left as a pint-sized IOU by a player who went broke, she conjures a house full of trouble every time she tries to cast a spell. And to top it off, jealous magicians have hired the notorious assassin, The Axe, to cut more than the deck - ." Interiors - pages and some inside of covers have light to moderate browning, volume 3 has one page with small corner crease and volume 4 has two pages with small corner creases. 10 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

13 Fraser, George MacDonald. FLASHMAN AND THE REDSKINS. FROM THE FLASHMAN PAPERS, 1849-50 AND 1875-76.
London Collins 1982 0002226618 / 9780002226615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Barbosa dust jacket art.
479 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "When the tide of battle surged over the slopes of Little Bighorn, and Sitting Bull's braves gathered for the final charge that would sweep away the gallant remnant of Custer's 7th Cavalry, a clarion voice was heard above the crash of shots and whistle of arrows, the war-whoops and the pounding hooves: - Readers of his previous adventures will not fail to identify the speaker, or to recognise the tall, distinguished figure in evening dress, tails and whiskers, fleeing the stricken field: Sir Harry Flashman, V.C., veteran of countless retreats from battle and bedchamber, the most decorated coward of the Victorian age, was meeting his fate with the same matchless poltroonery and deafness to duty and decency which had sustained him through a lifetime of dishonourable service, and endeared him to a generation of readers. But how the arch-cad of Dr Arnold's Rugby found himself in the climactic struggle of the American West is only one chapter in an odyssey as hair-raising and scandalous as any in his six earlier volumes of memoirs. He traces it with his usual shameless candour and caustic humour, from the wagon-trains of the Forty-Niners, when he foug ht his terrified way across the Plains in command of a bordello on wheels, to the holocaust of Bent's Fort and the horrors of scalp-hunting raids, Apache warpaths, dinner parties with Custer, captivity among the Sioux, confrontations with President Grant and Wild Bill Hickock, duels, escapes, conspiracies, and shoot-outs - to say nothing of passionate encounters with Indian belles, dusky beauties, enthusiastic widows, and mysterious adventuresses. This is Flashy's West as only he can describe it - the West, at once legendary and authentic, of Mangas Colorado and Kit Carson, of Custer and Spotted Tail, of Crazy Horse and the Deadwood stage, a pageant of savage warriors and Mountain Men, glory-hunting soldiers and gunfighters, gamblers, eccentrics, scoundrels, and those extraordinary folk, white and Indian, who broke the trails or resisted the invasion." Slight ridge down centre of spine, some light toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine, flap-folds and top part of panels; minor edge wrinkling.

London Leo Cooper 1970 085052055X / 9780850520552 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Osbert Lancaster.
93 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. A tongue-in-cheek take-off of the 'Famous Regiments' series. "The untrammelled deserts of the Army List (restricted) can offer no oasis of information; Whitehall's hallowed sanctuary can only look askance at the casual enquirer who asks: 'Who are the Queen's Malabars?' In all the dark corners of the earth, in all the torrid zones of the extremities previously defended, nay, patronised by the British Army, the 200th Foot have always distinguished themselves by their steadiness in adversity, by their utter fearlessness in the face of the foe, and by their universal joie de vivre, elan and esprit de corps. It was the 'Old 200th' who put Waterloo on the map (27 miles to the south-east of its original position), who held Barnard Castle against the attacking hordes of Bashi-Bazouks - even when the supply of Gevrey Chambertin '38 gave out, who fought the Royalists to a standstill at Chalgrove and defeated the Ironsides in one afternoon, the fighting regiment who walked around the Maginot Line even before the demolition of the Siegfried Line had been completed. With the honesty bred of such men as these one can truly say: 'There has never been a regiment like the Queen's Malabars' - and there can certainly never have been a regimental history like this." Very small bump to top corners of boards. Dust jacket is price clipped, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of flap- folds and spine, very light browning, minor soiling, corner crease on rear flap.

He has thirty days to bring back the artifact - or the slow-acting poison the League has fed him will kick in, and (he) will be history." 4. The Stainless Steel Rat - 158 pp, Sphere 1976 reprint, ISBN 0722144091 - "(He's a) cosmic criminal, the smoothest, sneakiest con-man in the known Universe. He can take any bank in the Galaxy, con a captain out of his ship, start a war or stop one - whichever pays the most. So when the law finally catches up with the Stainless Steel Rat, there is only one thing to do - make him a cop. And turn him loose on a villainous lady who is building herself a battleship." 5. The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge - 196 pp, Bantam 1988 reprint, ISBN 0553173952 - "It was totally impossible for Cliaand to wage interstellar war - but the crazy little planet was winning, whatever the odds. And there wasn't much the peaceful galaxy could do - except send Slippery Jim diGriz - the Stainless Steel Rat - to wage his own kind of guerrilla campaign against the gray men of Cliaand and their leader, the indomitable Kraj. But then the Rat was aided by a band of liberated Amazons and his own beloved, murderous Angelina - and they had to swing the odds in his favour." 6. The Stainless Steel Rat Saves the World - 160 pp, Berkley 1973, ISBN 42502475X - "Someone is meddling with time. People are fading from existence first, members of The Special Corps which (reluctantly) employs him, then Jim's wife and sons. The source of the meddling is located in the distant past - the year 1984 - in an ancient, forgotten nation called 'the United States of America'. If he is to save his family and himself, (the Stainless Steel Rat) must go there, through time, and save the world!" 7. The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You! - 155 pp, Bantam 1988 10th printing, ISBN 0553276115 - "Loathsome, mindsucking creatures from an unknown star are closing in on Earth. Once again it's up to the Stainless Steel Rat to save humanity. In a daring caper packed with action and laughs, the Rat goes undercover to stop the invasion - disguised as a hideous, bugeyed extraterrestrial!" 8. The Stainless Steel Rat for President - 185 pp, Bantam 1988 8th printing, ISBN 0553276123 - "The Special Corps has given the Rat a daring assignment - liberate a backward tourist planet from the clutches of an aging dictator. With his lovely but lethal wife Angelina and his two stalwart sons James and Bolivar, diGriz pits ballots against bullets in the fight for freedom. He's vowed to restore truth, justice and democracy to the world of Paraiso-Aqui, if he has to lie, cheat and steal to do it!" 9. The Stainless Steel Rat goes to Hell - 253 pp, Tor 1997 2nd printing, ISBN 0812551079 - "DiGriz is strenously fighting boredom on a ritzy pleasure planet when his beloved wife disappears while visiting the Temple of Eternal Truth, an enigmatic institution that promises its patrons a sneak peek at Heaven - for a price. Determined to get his wife back, he takes on the Temple. He thinks he's ready for anything, but he never expects to find himself banished to Hell, complete with pointy-tailed devils. Has divine judgment caught up with the Rat at last? Of course not."
