And then, in a flash, (he) realizes it doesn't have to be a dream. It can all be his - but only if he can pull of the Perfect Crime. This is the beginning of a rollicking, non-stop escapade that introduces the hapless McGruber to a world of deception and devious characters - and an insurance investigator who hires (him) to solve his own crime." 4 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

THE QUEEN'S MALABARS (THE OLD 200th): A NOT SO FAMOUS REGIMENT., Graham, Andrew.
9 Graham, Andrew. THE QUEEN'S MALABARS (THE OLD 200th): A NOT SO FAMOUS REGIMENT.
London Leo Cooper 1970 085052055X / 9780850520552 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Osbert Lancaster.
93 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. A tongue-in-cheek take-off of the 'Famous Regiments' series. "The untrammelled deserts of the Army List (restricted) can offer no oasis of information; Whitehall's hallowed sanctuary can only look askance at the casual enquirer who asks: 'Who are the Queen's Malabars?' In all the dark corners of the earth, in all the torrid zones of the extremities previously defended, nay, patronised by the British Army, the 200th Foot have always distinguished themselves by their steadiness in adversity, by their utter fearlessness in the face of the foe, and by their universal joie de vivre, elan and esprit de corps. It was the 'Old 200th' who put Waterloo on the map (27 miles to the south-east of its original position), who held Barnard Castle against the attacking hordes of Bashi-Bazouks - even when the supply of Gevrey Chambertin '38 gave out, who fought the Royalists to a standstill at Chalgrove and defeated the Ironsides in one afternoon, the fighting regiment who walked around the Maginot Line even before the demolition of the Siegfried Line had been completed. With the honesty bred of such men as these one can truly say: 'There has never been a regiment like the Queen's Malabars' - and there can certainly never have been a regimental history like this." Very small bump to top corners of boards. Dust jacket is price clipped, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of flap- folds and spine, very light browning, minor soiling, corner crease on rear flap.

11 Jack, Donald ME SO FAR. THE FINAL VOLUME OF THE BANDY PAPERS. VOLUME VII.
Toronto Doubleday 1989 0385252226 / 9780385252225 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Kim La Fave, Dust Jacket Art.
346 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(C)ontinues the well-established tradition for humour and adventure as Bartholomew Bandy pursues his mad destiny in India. It's 1925 and Bandy is working for the Maharajah of Jhamjarh, trying to set up and operate a new air force while sidestepping the short-sighted protests of the British government in India. The new air force certainly comes in handy when the nefarious neighboring state of Khaliwar decides to attack. But they haven't counted on Jhamjarh's secret weapon - the unorthodox methods and outrageous behavior of Bartholomew Bandy. Despite these distractions, the mystical visions of India have their effect on Bandy, leaving him a changed man. The underlying element of anger which has always been a part of his humor is finally resolved - which makes for a very satisfactory ending to the story of Bartholomew Bandy." Light edge wear at top/bottom of spine, very small scuff on front board near spine. Dust jacket has small crease at top of spine, tiny dint at bottom of front hinge.

12 Jack, Donald THAT'S ME IN THE MIDDLE. THE ADVENTURES OF BARTHOLOMEW BANDY. VOLUME TWO. (VOL. 2)
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1973 0385049013 / 9780385049016 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
300 pp, 8 3/8" H. "Here are the further misadventures of Bartholomew Bandy, World War I Ace extraordinaire introduced in 'Three Cheers for Me'. Bandy is once again lending his peculiar talents to the war effort. Fate has smiled (perhaps leered) on him and he is now a Lt. Colonel and liaison officer in London for the Secretary of State for Air. Most of Bandy's liaisons leave something to be desired. A penniless Bolshevik spy bullies him into buying a gaudy painting by an upstart named Matisse, a buxom widow makes forward advances at him under his fiancee's nose, and he's almost lynched when the Prime Minister, Lloyd George, picks him to make a speech denouncing the British Chief of Staff. Instead he's sent off to the trenches of France - to join a freewheeling bicycle brigade with unorthodox methods of killing Germans and staying in high spirits. Bandy is also subjected to a number of other horrors: an evening in a Dublin pub with a band of Irish rebels, a fox-hunt where, under Bandy's inspired directions, the hounds end up in his host's house, an unforgettable honeymoon in a Scottish castle, and an English country fair that could have been directed by Mack Sennett." Previous owner's embossed stamp mark on free front endpaper, tiny dint on half-title page, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, light browning to top and for-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light edge browning - mainly on inside edge, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wear, minor fading to spine color, two tiny closed perforations on front hinge, a few tiny stains on inside bottom edge of rear panel, two tiny scuffs on rear hinge.

BARON MUNCHAUSEN AND OTHER COMIC TALES FROM GERMANY., Raspe, R.E. and Others. Edited by Stella Humprhies.
18 Raspe, R.E. and Others. Edited by Stella Humprhies. BARON MUNCHAUSEN AND OTHER COMIC TALES FROM GERMANY.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1971 0460050966 / 9780460050968 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Ulrik Schramm.
110 pp, 8 1/2" H. Red & white pictorial endpapers, light brown boards, repeating the pattern from the endpapers in red, with titling in dark purple on spine and front board. Colour plates and b&w drawings. One of the Children's Illustrated Classics series. "The most familiar of the traditional humorous tales from Germany concern the foolish Men of Schilda, the playful rascal Till Eulenspiegel, and the supreme genius of the tall story, Baron Munchausen. All these characters feature in this attractively illustrated C.I.C. edition. It includes the original Munchausen tales written in English by R.E. Raspe and published in 1785, and also the most famous tales of his imitators. The wholly fantastic travels, campaigns and adventures of the noble Baron can hardly have hoped to convince their readers. They are purest tall-tale nonsense, intriguing to practically every young reader of about seven to eleven in their flights of imaginative fancy. The Baron himself is happily shot as a human cannonball far above the town, attempts to climb to the moon on a quick-growing bean of his own sowing, boasts of encountering a stag with a cherry-tree growing between its antlers, explains how, though his horse was cut in two, he continued to ride on one half only. The famous tales of the hinged cranium and of General Bruin are also included. Such is the fabric of this volume of inspired nonsense." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling, small ghost sticker mark on front flap.

20 Seare, Nicholas. RUDE TALES AND GLORIOUS. BEING: THE ONLY TRUE ACCOUNT OF DIVERSE FEATS OF BRAWN AND BAWD PERFORMED BY KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHST OF THE ROUND TABLE.
London Granada 1984 0246122935 / 9780246122933 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good William Bramhall.
232 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "A bawdy, bouncy, hilarious retelling of the Arthurian tales - a combination of Monty Python and Boccaccio, writen under a pen name by a best-selling author. The scene: a castle in fourteenth-century Wales, lashed by wind and rain. At table: the baron, his daughter, his wife, and the new cleric. A beggar and a hag arrive and convince the baron that they are Sir Launcelot and the fair Elaine; they promise to tell the Arthurian legends as they 'really happened'. In these ten astounding tales - each one more rollicking than the last - 'Sir Launcelot' and 'Elaine' reveal the true story of King Arthur (he was once the assistant in Merlin's magic act); introduce us to the Black and Red Knights, so enamoured of each other they are hard put to find a reason to battle; show us the Enchanted Forest, where an ugly old woman assures Sir Gay that all is opposite - that she is in truth a rare beauty; and introduces us to the marvellous Sir Persival, whose enormous 'burden' is a great source of ribald interest to both sexes." Tiny light stain on fore-edge of text block, very light edge wear, wrinkling at top of spine, minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning on flaps.
