Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." New York W.W. Norton 2009 0393061027 / 9780393061024 4th Printing Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ R. Crumb.
Unpaginated, 11 1/8" H. "Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, retells the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a takeoff of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated with the Bible's language, 'a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions', that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation assembled primarily from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Version. Now readers of every persuasion - Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers - can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic and even juicy stories." Profusely illustrated in b&w comic strip fashion at an "adult" level, with an Introduction and Commentary by Crumb. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

7 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON., Hamilton, James.
10 Hamilton, James. WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON.
London Pavilion 1992 1851457194 / 9781851457199 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine William Heath Robinson.
151 pp, 12 1/8" H. B&w and colour reproductions, photographs. "In this first fully illustrated monograph of William Heath Robinson's life and work, James Hamilton makes a refreshingly new exploration of the personality of this convivial family man and deeply serious artist. Through fascinating new insights, he traces the influences on his art, the development of his uniquely individual humorous style, and the unexpected path that his career followed: the switch from landscapes to book illustration, and early success as illustrator of Poe, Cervantes and Hans Andersen; the creation of his engaging character Uncle Lubin, his cartoons for magazines, and the First World War anti-German satires which earned him an enthusiastic following. Only after he had submitted his illustrations for a 'Complete Works of Shakespeare' in 1922, promptly cancelled, did Heath Robinson turn away from literary illustration. Then came the immensely popular books on golf and railways and motoring, murals and decorations for a liner, gadgets for the Ideal Home Exhibition of 1934, and a wealth of inspired magazine and commercial work. Hamilton rounds off his account of Heath Robinson's life and career with detailed appendices, including a chronology of his life, an important discussion of his sources, comprehensive bibliographies, and lists of his exhibitions, advertising work and ephemera. Published here for the first time are examples of the recently discovered Shakespeare illustrations." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

London Macmillan 1978 0333198050 / 9780333198056 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
207 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). B&w illustrations. "There have been few more consistent, or more satisfying, targets for cartoonists over the centuries than Royalty - above all in Britain where for over three hundred years our reigning monarchs have been satirised or flattered, ridiculed or glorified in the public print. (This book) sets out to document this continuing confrontation between the establishment and the caricaturists, from the reign of Elizabeth I to the present day. Political crises, religious schisms, national scandals and passing indiscretions all kindled the fires of contemporary cartoonists' inspiration: Charles I and Parliament, Popish plots and Jacobite invasions, Hanoverian mistresses, the excesses of the Regency, William IV and reform, Victoria and her ministers, Edward VII and his escapades, the Abdication crisis. Here too are the foreigners' views of our kings and queens and royal relatives, and generations of royal courtships and coronations, pomp and patronage seen through the eyes of some of Britain's greatest cartoonists. The work of Gillray, Rowlandson, Cruikshank, Tenniel, May, Beerbohm, Giles, Trog, and many others is testament to freedom of expression in this country and gives a fascinating perspective on the chequered careers of our rulers." 256 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "This volume, published to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ernest Shepard, offers the best and most characteristic of his whole range of work; it also provides a balanced appreciation of the man as artist and companion. Ernest H Shepard, 'Kipper' to his family and friends, is perhaps best known - and loved - for the children's illustrations he did for the work of A.A. Milne and for his incomparable drawings for Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. His output, however, was considerable and altogether he illustrated somewhere near to a hundred books. Over a period of fifty years he also had weekly drawings in Punch magazine and these too are represented here." Contents: Preface; 1879-1897: A Victorian boyhood; 1897-1914: The making of an artist (1. Willingly to work and marriage; 2. viii, 72 pp, 9 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w cartoons/drawings. "Long before Billy Bluegum (a koala bear) made his trek to fame in the pages of 'The Magic Pudding', readers of the 'Bulletin' and the 'Lone Hand' delighted in the activities of Lindsay's most popular bear. Through two tumultuous decades, Billy's adventures relfected the social and political turmoil of a country suffering the birth pains of nationhood and soon to be plunged into a world war. Society, marriage and divorce, elections, conscription and war, the races and Christmas - all are dealt with in Lindsay's inimitable style; his wry and witty captions add the final piquant touch. Lindsay's unique understanding and love of Australia's animals are nowhere more apparent than in his enchanting portrayal of Billy and his bush friends. All appear in this selection by Keith Wingrove - which includes both the first and last Billy Bluegum pictures drawn by Norman Lindsay. The drawings are at once a joy to the eye and an inexhaustible source of fun and laughter." Very light edge wear to boards - moderate on bottom edge.
