373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." She entered medical school in 1950 and was one of the f irst women in Quebec to receive a diploma as a surgeon. In 1961, she married an Italian doctor, Piero Conti, and went to northern Uganda with him. There, they established St. Mary's-Lacor Hospital. For over 35 years, they treated people w i t h c o n t agious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS. They continually expanded the services of the hospital and trained Ugandans to staff it. Dr. Lucille performed thousands of operations under extremely difficult conditions. W he n ci v il w ar b roke out in Uganda in the early 1970s, she was forced to become a war surgeon. Even though repeated rebel attacks on the hospital put their lives in constant peril, the couple stayed on to help the people who depended on th em for m edi ca l c are . Bef ore the world knew about HIV, Dr. Lucille contracted the virus when sharp bone fragments penetrated her rubber gloves in the course of performing an operation on a wounded soldier. She took precautions but contined to wo rk f or anot her ten yea rs to save lives and raise funds for the hospital. She spoke out boldly on HIV/AIDS and became an inspiring example to people living with the disease. She died of AIDS in 1996 and is buried in Uganda, on the grounds of Lacor Ho spita l." 16 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1986 0888945213 / 9780888945211 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
224 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In this anecdotal recounting of his boyhood years, his experiences in medical school, where he met his wife Janet, also a doctor, and his service in the armed forces during World War II and after, Morris Gibson shows what life is like for a doctor at large. He is a man devoted to healing, whether in England, or in a foothills town in Alberta, a western province of Canada. With his family, he makes his way with skill and intuition, curing when he can, listening and learning when he cannot. He recalls simple people in complex situations, the amazing effects of medical break-throughs, tragedy and triumph. And all is told in his original voice, that of a man who learns not only by seeing his patients as individuals as unique as their medical problems, but by applying his skill as a doctor to a changing world." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.
