Front boards have gilt lettering and are blocked with a design by Hardcastle. Colour frontispieces and b&w illustrations. Very light wrinkle at top/bottom of spines. 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' has a very small crease at bottom corner of pages 295 to 302 and a small wrinkle at bottom edge of page leaf 237/238. 'The Three Hostages' has a very small light stain on fore-edge of text block. Book heights vary slightly. Slipcase has general minor rubbing - light rub mark on title panel.

226 pp, 189 pp, 189 pp, 160 pp, 9" H - 4 volumes in dark gray slipcase with gold lettering and profile of Miss Marple in black on front panel. Colour illustrations. Each volume is bound in a different coloured buckram with matching endpapers and gilt lettering on spines. There is a different illustration by Davidson blocked on the front cover of each volume. There are a few tiny specks of colour loss on the front cover of 'A Pocketful of Rye' and more significant colour loss on the front cover of 'The Murder at the Vicarage', particularly the white areas of the vicarage and a few areas of Miss Marple's clothing - see scans. 'The Murder at the Vicarage' has a small bump at bottom corner of pages from title page to page 14. Slipcase has a few very small faint white rub marks. 'The Body in the Library' very small crease at top corner of page leaf 151/152 - faint crease indentation in adjacent pages.

Dark blue endpapers, colour and b&w plates, b&w maps. Maroon slipcase with photographic portrait of Winston S. Churchill on one panel. Vol. 1 has a small very faint scratch just above tthe spine title block, Vol. 3 has very small area of minor glue residue on bottom of text block. Slipcase is structurally sound, has various small scratches and soiling marks, 1" dia light stain on top surface, a few tiny dents - mainly on bottom surface, faint liquid splashes on top of side panel portrait, portrait has light wear on front edge.

181 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H). Bound in full brown cloth with an etching in black; endpapers with the coats of arms of George II and the East India Company. Brown slipcase. "The frontispiece reproduces a page from the original manuscript, which was compiled between 1754 and 1757. This is the first publication of the diary, which was discovered in France in the early 1960s. Val Biro's 14 scraperboard illustrations consist of 11 headpieces, two cartouches (each used on one of the divisional titles for the two parts of the book), and the title-page vignette. The etching used on the binding shows Fort Saint George at Madras, and was made at around the time Corneille was in India." Map of Plassy. Previous owner's bookplate on verso of free front endpaper, very small bump at bottom corner of front board. Slipcase has light edge rubbing, small rear corner bump, three tiny/small light stains, wear at top/bottom front edges and for 1" on side bottom edge.

Medium brown slipcase. Hannah Firmin's b&w wood-engravings consist of a frontispiece and 57 head-pieces, one of which is used seven times. A collection of folk-tales, legends and fairy tales from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Man, under the headings: Fairies; Origins and Causes; Kings and Heroes; Fabulous Beasts; Nursery and Jocular; Ghosts; Fables and Animal Tales; Giants and Strong Men; Historical; Saints and Devils; Enchantment; Envoi. Tiny bump at bottom of rear hinge. Slipcase has tiny dent on one front edge, light soiling on bottom panel, very small bump at one top rear corner.

'The Descent of Man' has small bump at top corner of front board and top of front hinge. 'The Expression of the Emotions' has wrinkle at bottom of spine. Slipcase has a small bump at one top front and rear corner, very light rubbing. The gold lettering on spine labels is all complete - scan does not show it well.

Eccles's binding design shows silhouettes of Holmes and Watson which advance across the binding with each volume. When the spines are lined up in order, the silhouette of Holmes, in deerstalker hat with pipe and magnifying glass, appears. B&w illustrations by Francis Mosley. The volumes comprise: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (12 short stories); The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (11 short stories); The Return of Sherlock Holmes (13 short stories); His Last Bow, Some Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes (8 short stories; and, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (12 short stories). The Return of Sherlock Holmes has a very small mark of light glue on front board (probably from manufacturing process). Slipcase has a light bump/wrinkle on one rear edge, most panels have scattered light white rub marks - more on bottom panel.
