9 Due, John F. THE INTERCITY ELECTRIC RAILWAY INDUSTRY IN CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
118 pp, 10 1/8" H. Canadian Studies in Economics No.18. B&w photographs, maps, tables, graphs. "The intercity electric railway industry in Canada, which began in 1887, ended in 1959. Peak interest in the industry was between 1910 and 1920, the era of Sir Adam Beck's projected radial network that would have covered much of the southern portion of Ontario. But the plans came too late and the radial system was never built. The Canadian electric lines developed later than their United States counterparts, but lasted somewhat longer, and for a time in the 1950's there were more electric passenger-carrying trains in Canada than in the United States. This study describes the rise and decline of the electric railway industry in Canada. It includes a general history of the industry, the development of the lines, their financing and control, and a brief but fascinating account of the 25 individual companies which operated the roads." Tiny wrinkle at bottom of front hinge, tiny ink mark on rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, small tear at top of front hinge - archivally taped.

CHIEF ENGINEER: LIFE OF A NATION BUILDER - SANFORD FLEMING., Green, Lorne.
11 Green, Lorne. CHIEF ENGINEER: LIFE OF A NATION BUILDER - SANFORD FLEMING.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550021958 B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of the most creative, adventurous, and yet too-often overlooked giants of the Industrial Age - Canada's Sandford Fleming. His influence spanned the North American continent and beyond. As chief engineer of the Intercolonial and Canadian Pacific railways, he shaped and steered the greatest engineering challenge of his day: the laying of the ribbons of railway steel that bound together a fledgling country. He can be credited as well with the telegraph cables that began to criss-cross the globe. Few are aware that it was Fleming who gave us the system of universal time. He also designed the first Canadian adhesive postage stamp, which was issued in 1851. Sandford Fleming's triumphs are all the greater considering the natural and human adversities obstructing every step of his way. Jealousies, back-stabbing, pork-barrel politics, and bureaucratic ineptitude were as intrinsic to mega-projects then as they are now. Fleming's life story constitutes a compelling and universal drama." Previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has corner crease on front flap. Very Good+/Very Good +

New York Macmillan 1977 0025676601 / 9780025676602 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good+
491 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). One of the 'Railroads of America' series. B&w photographs, maps. "In 1881 a company was formed to lay the 1,900 miles of railway that would connect Montreal and British Columbia in just five years. There were two separate and distinct sections. The first extended through the forbidding Laurentian Shield north of Lake Huron and Lake Superior, between Callander and Thunder Bay. The second spanned the 1,250 miles between Red River and Kamloops, starting with 850 miles of relatively easy going across the prairies, followed by 400 mountainous miles through the Rockies and on to the Pacific. On November 7, 1885, with a minimum of ceremony, the last spike in the track was driven at Craigellachie. There followed the years of expansion. The railroad was doing its job and now it ws the turn of ocean liners, Great Lakes steamers and finally, the airlines. Diversification, the prevailing pattern in the middle twentieth century, had been foreseen by the Canadian Pacific in the 1870s. Its original charter empowered it to own telegraph and telephone lines and to build wharves, docks, and grain elevators, and an early critic's remark that he 'did not know of anything they are not authorized to do' is still appropriate." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light wear on bottom edge of boards, shelf soiling on bottom of stext block. two very small corner bumps. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, a few very small tears and tiny chips

WESTERN RAIL TRAIL., McKillop, Norman.
19 McKillop, Norman. WESTERN RAIL TRAIL.
London Thomas Nelson and Sons 1962 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
190 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Norman McKillop, a retired top-link driver, has fulfulled his ambition of visiting North America, and has written the story of his journeys on the Canadian railways as he travelled from East to West. After he completed his Western Rail Trail proper over Canada he spent some days in New York and neighbouring states. His description of his visits to the Pennsyl-vania and Grand Central Stations with all their marvels of electronic working and devices makes fascinating reading. His enthusiasm for everything to do with railway working won the co-operation of every railway officer and man, and the whole account is an intensely human document. He not only noted all the details in which Canadian railways differ from those in this country (Great Britain), but his story gives a very vivid account of the people with whom he came in contact." THE HISTORY OF CANADA., McNaught, Kenneth.
20 McNaught, Kenneth. THE HISTORY OF CANADA.
New York Praeger 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
336 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w maps. "The history of Canada is the story of an ever expanding frontier and of the attempt to create a new nation in the face of enormous physical and human obstacles. (The author) follows this development from the very first probings of the tiny bands of explorers, missionaries, and 'coureurs de bois' that opened up 'New France'. He examines the great military struggles for control of the continent in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which played such a vital part in laying down the present political and racial divisions. (Later) Canadians faced the enormous problems of welding scattered communities into provinces and provinces into a self-governing federation. The political task of nation-building was itself closely bound up with the building of the railways and the exploitation of the country's vast resources. Professor McNaught analyzes these great economic and social changes, as well as the part Canada played in two world wars and the process by which the Dominion evolved a new role in international affairs and new relationships with both Britain and the United States. (Concludes) with a survey of postwar Canada, which emphasizes that the expansion of the human frontier and the problems of unity and nationhood remain part of the Canadian question." Two very tiny stains on the half-title page, very small soft bump at top corner of middle third of pages, faint scuff on top of text block, very light wrinkling at top of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
