Unpaginated, 11 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, beautifully illustrated in full colour throughout. "This magnificent edition combines the original and authentic story, as it was written by Hans Christian Andersen more than one hundred and fifty years ago, with dazzling illustrations by Charles Santore, in a spectacular vision that is as fresh as it is profoundly moving. Faithful to Andersen's story as it was first published in Denmark in 1837, this classic translation includes all the fascinating episodes in the life of the brave and resourceful child-woman of the sea, who falls in love not only with the handsome prince but also with the idea of becoming a human being. It tells of her courage and steadfastness in pursuing her goals, through pain, hardship, and sacrifice. There have been many translations of this fairy tale, but this edition presents the original story in all its wonder, essentially as it was translated with grace and elegance by Mary Howitt, a correspondent and friend of Andersen, who introduced his work to the English reading public."
