After a series of unpleasant adventures, Martin and Mark return to England, Martin is reconciled with his grandfather, scoundrels are exposed and faithful love is rewarded. His avaricious uncle, Ralph, arranges for his employment by Wackford Squeers, headmaster of a boarding school in Yorkshire for unwanted boys. Horrified by the treatment of the children there, Nicholas flees and one of the boys, Smike, begs to go with him. After a period as actors in Vincent Crummles' theatre in Portsmouth, they return to London and meet the charitable brothers Cheeryble who assist them. Romance and tragedy follow as Nicholas meets the love of his life and Smike dies of consumption, after which it is revealed that he was, in fact, Ralph Nickleby's son. Sunday School presentation inscription in elegant calligraphy dated 1931 on rear of frontispiece, crease rear pastedown, light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, light wear at corners and bottom edge of covers.

A dark story of child labour, criminals, street children, poverty and despair, peopled with memorable characters like the Artful Dodger, Fagin, Mr. Bumble, Bill Sikes and Nancy. Small area of very light stains on fore-edge of text block, very small crease at bottom corner of pages 167 to 176, minor edge wear to covers, tiny faint scuff on front cover. Slipcase has light edge and corner wear, very small dent on one front edge, light creasing along top/bottom panels, top/bottom panels are concave.

When a young man finds he can only inherit his father's estate if he marries a mercenary young woman, he pretends to have died, allowing the fortune to fall to a kindly old couple. Engaged as their secretary, he gets to know Bella and they fall in love, after which he reveals his true identity. The supporting cast includes the dastardly Silas Wegg, Mr. Venus, the taxidermist, Jenny Wren, the dolls' dressmaker, Lizzie Hexam, Eugene Wrayburn, etc. Precious owner's small label on free front endpaper, remnant of flap of original glassine wrap is affixed to front pastedown, some areas of light loss of colour on rear pastedown, very light wear at corners of covers. Slipcase has very light edge rubbing and rubbing on bottom panel.
