4 Anderes, Fred & Agranoff, Ann. ICE PALACES.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1983 0771598572 / 9780771598579 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
132 pp, oblong (9 1/8" H x 10 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, repro-ductions, architectural drawings. "The magical buildings illustrated in this pioneer study of a virtually unknown architectural phenomenon were truly built of ice, and they were said to shimmer with color and fire reminiscent of sapphire, topaz, and opal. In style they recalled medieval castles, Gothic cathed-rals, Russian palaces, and Art Deco fantasies. Many were huge, reaching as high as a 14 -story building and extending as long as a football field, but, of course, there's no physical trace of them. Nevertheless, the authors have discovered dozens of historic photographs, lithographs, postcards, paintings, and drawings of these fabulous but ephemeral constructions, as well as mementoes of the winter activities and sports surrounding their creation. (They) relate the history of ice castle building and examine about thirty in detail. This type of architectural tour de fource had its beginning in 18th-century Russia, when the eccentric Empress Anna Ivanova built an icy honeymoon cottage for an out-of-favor prince. In North America, ice palaces were created as centrepieces for the winter carnivals that sprang up in northern cities in the late 19th century. Between 1883 and 1942, grand castles were built of blocks of ice in the Canadian cities of Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa, and also in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Leadville, Colorado. Today the leading centers for construction in ice and snow are at the annual winter festivals held in Quebec, Canada, and Sapporo, Japan. (T)he authors - both architects - examine the theory and practice of building with ice (which under certain conditions has the structural properties of concrete), both for practical and fantastic purposes." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket has light rubbing - mainly on front panel, minor wrinkling at top of spine.

9 Bayne-Powell, Rosamond. HOUSEKEEPING IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. (18th CENTURY.)
London John Murray 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
208 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Decorations, furniture, pictures, china, linen, the kitchen, food, drink, entertaining, washing, sanitation, heating, lighting, servants, illness, remedies, handicrafts, money, taxation and household superstitions and customs - all, so to speak, bring grist to the author's mill and the result is a graphic and convincing presentment of life in the period. The 'good old days' may have been enjoyable for those with plenty of money and good health, for the sick and poor much of life must have been horrible, the squalor behind the grandeur, the dirt underneath the cloth of gold - but how gracious and artistic the great houses were." Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear, several small and tiny edge chips, several cup ring stains/impressions on front panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

13 Brown, Jane. LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS.
London Viking 1996 0670858714 / 9780670858712 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). "The great architect and his architecture are well known, but what about his patrons, his clients? Who were they? Why did they build? What did they pay for their buildings? From his earliest patrons, a stream of repressed gentlewomen of intelligence and means, through a galaxy of Edwardian heroes and villains, this book tells their stories. Some of them are famous, others unknown, except as Lutyen's clients: here are Herbert Jekyll, Jennie Churchill, J.M. Barrie, Hugh Lane, Victoria Sackville, lords, ladies, Souls, bankers, press barons, politicians, the beau monde of Edwardian England, as well as a schoolteacher who inherited a fortune and a prospering Bradford wool merchant. The complex networking of families and friends threads through the events and settings of Edwardian society, like a richly patterned embroidery. Everything of significance that Lutyens did had its roots in the Edwardian decade - and his clients turn out to be both the triumph and the tragedy of his career. (L)avishly illustrated with the human face of great architecture - sketches, drawings and photographs from family archives all over England." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, slight browning to spine, edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION., Coad, J.G. (Jonathan)
16 Coad, J.G. (Jonathan) HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION.
London Victor Gollancz, London, 1983. 1983 0575032774 / 9780575032774 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
160 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, plans, elevations, maps. "From the 1690s to the First World War, British maritime power, though often challenged, ruled supreme. It was a key factor in the nation's commercial growth which fuelled and underpinned industrial and imperial expansion. Central to the creation and maintenance of that supremacy were the royal dockyards, and the naval hospitals. Without these there could have been no Royal Navy, and Britain's modern history would have been very different. (This book) concentrates on the period from 1700 to 1900, with particular emphasis on the dockyards built to service the sailing navy. They are rich in naval and architectural history and were industrial centres in England well before the Industrial Revolution. They go far towards explaining how it was that Britain was able to maintain and sustain one of the greatest navies the world has seen. With numerous illustrations featuring surviving buildings in Chatham, Sheerness, Portsmouth, Devonport, Harwich, Gibraltar, Minorca, Malta, Bermuda and Antigua, (it) is a fascinating and important book." Tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1971 0773501142 / 9780773501140 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
220 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The expansion of architectural theory into the realms of ecology, cybernetics and even pathology has inevitably led to renewed speculation about the nature of architectural decision-making. But whereas research has tended to place all the emphasis on the psychology of perception, Professor Peter Colllins here suggests that a more fruitful field of investigation is to be found in the intellectual techniques evolved by the legal profession. (The book) utilizes this analogy by surveying the topic consecutively from two separate viewpoints. Part I analyses the nature of judgements about architecture by comparing them with concepts evolved within the legal process. Part II attempts a synthesis in which, after suggesting some of the inadequacies of biological and aesthetic criteria, the author puts forth a case for fuller recognition of the jurist's contribution to the notion of professional criteria, as they affect, or should affect, architectural judgement." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, faint erased pencil mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

London Hodder & Stoughton 2011 1444730827 / 9781444730821 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. Signed by author on title page (signature only). "Almina was the illegitimate daughter of banking tycoon Alfred de Rothschild. She was his only daughter and he doted on her. She married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, at 19, with an enormous dowry. At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying mix of sumptuous banquets for 500 and even the occasional royal visitor. Almina oversaw 80 members of staff - many of whom came from families who had worked at Highclere for generations. But when the First World War broke out, life at Highclere, both upstairs and downstairs, changed forever. History intervened and Almina and the staff of Highclere were thrown into one of the most turbulent times of the last century. Almina was forced to draw on her deepest reserves of courage in order to ensure her family, the staff and the castle survived. This is the remarkable story of a lost time. But Highclere remains and in this book, Lady Carnarvon weaves Almina's journey and those of her family into the heritage and history of one of England's most exquisite Victorian stately homes." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor to very light edge wrinkling.

ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND., Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison.
19 Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson (Educational), London, 1968.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 298762102 B&w drawings, floor plans, elevations. "Illustrated with over 70 line drawings and plans, the text spans over 2,000 years of architecture in England. The account begins with a discussion of the villas, camps and roads of Roman Britain, and shows how this heritage slowly decayed, giving way to the Romanesque imported by the conquering Normans. The soaring Gothic of the middle ages yields in its turn to another E u r o p e a n influence, the Renaissance, which acquires its own English character. The Baroque, Pallandian and Neo-Classic movements are then analysed, and the survey is brought right up to date with the industrial and scientific revolutions of t he n in et ee nt h and twentieth centuries, and their effects on techniques and styles. Dominant architectural styles are fully defined and illustrated, and the many examples given will stimulate a study in depth by means of visits to churches, ho use s, cas tle s, mus eu ms and modern streets and office blocks. The special value of this book for the student of architecture is the care taken by the author to illustrate his text at every point, with examples drawn from every field of arch itec ture - eccl esia sti cal and secular, domestic and institutional."
