CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS., Barker, Ralph.
1 Barker, Ralph. CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS.
Methuen, London, 1987, first edition.
172 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0413423107 B&w photographs. "When the passenger liner 'City of Benares' sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Brit ain, bound under a government-sponsored scheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the c i v i l i s ed world. Of 406 people on board 256 were lost - including, at first count, 83 of the evacuee children. In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. N or w as t he propaganda value neglected, a broadcast by King George VI the day after the news broke being clearly directed at neutral America. 'The world,' he said, 'could have no clearer proof of the wickedness against which we fight than th is fou l d eed '. Su s picions subsequently arose, however, that the British authorities had quite as much to answer for as the Nazis. Parents who, despite many misgivings, had entrusted their children to the scheme when invasion threatened, began to ask que stio ns when t hey learned that the promised naval escort had abandoned the convoy twenty-one hours before the 'Benares' was sunk. Allegations that crew members rushed the boats, that emergency equipment had failed, and that the whol e vo yage had b een u nde rtake n u nder the blight of racial prejudice, demanded a formal investigation. But somehow this was avoided, and the scandal was successfully hushed up. Ralph Barker, after a vivid and poignant reconstruction of the disa ster, turn s his attent ion to wha t re ally happened behind the scenes at the Admiralty and the Ministry of Shipping. The result is a harrowing story of human fallibility and human survival." Light to moderate browning to pages and edges of text block , mino r wrin kling a t to p/botto m of spine. Dust jacket has two areas of light edge wrinkling, Very Good-/Very Good

HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'., Bassett, Ronald.
2 Bassett, Ronald. HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'.
Arms and Armour, London, 1988, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0853689113 B&w maps and photographs. "The first HMS Sheffield was launched in 1936 to serve her flag bravely for thirty years. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the mo st illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that bat t leship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Se a, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. In 1943 she shared in the destruction of the battlecruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape and later supported carri er attacks upon Tirpitz. These, however, were but the highlights of this distinguished ship's wartime service. This book tells the story of her entire life and of her crews before, during and after World War Two - not from the detached perspective of an 'armchair historian', but from that of a writer who served at that time in a similar cruiser. Ronald Bassett was entrusted with research material accumulated over many years by an officer of Sheffield who died before those records could be turn ed into a book. Hundreds of her crew members, including several of her commanding officers, have contributed to this chronicle by means of their memoirs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, enabling (the author) to paint an a ccura te and powerfully evocative portrait of a famous ship." Slight bump at bottom of spine, slight waviness to edges of text block, previous owner's label on free front endpaper, book cracked in several palces but page signatures are holding firm ly. D ust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small edge tears (two taped) and chips, light rubbing with some slight color loss on rear panel. Very Good-/Good+

6 Brock, Jeffry V. WITH MANY VOICES. VOLUME I: THE DARK BROAD SEAS & VOLUME II: THE THUNDER AND THE SUNSHINE. MEMOIRS OF A SAILOR. 2 VOLUME SET.

275 pp, 384 pp, 9 1/4" H - 2 volume set. 'The Dark Broad Seas' - ISBN 0771016239- published 1981. 'The Thunder and the Sunshine' - ISBN 0771016255 - published 1983. B&w frontispiece in Volume I. The autobiography of Rear Admiral Jeffry V. Brock. In volume I he "describes his experiences as a commander of escort groups in the U-boat ridden Atlantic of World War II. Woven through the high adventure of combat are encounters with colourful political and military figures, and the feisty people of Britain. In 1950, Brock was appointed to command the Canadian naval forces sent to Korea. His meetings with General MacArthur are frankly recounted and give a unique view of this larger-than-life figure, and his handling of the Korean conflict." In volume II, "Brock writes of his time on the Directing Staff of the National Defence College of Canada and of fascinating overseas tours. He recalls meeting eminent personages of his day, such as Lord Louis Montbatten and Field Marshal Mont-gomery. He describes four interest-filled years in London as Naval Adviser to the High Commissioner and as Canada's naval representative in Europe. He returned to Canada in 1957, and a few years later was promoted to Rear Admiral. While serving as Vice Chief of Naval Staff in Ottawa, he sensed the distant rumblings of a new confrontation - a confrontation that spelled the end of the R.C.N. as men of Brock's era knew it. Paul Hellyer, the newly appointed Minister of Defence, was steering the federal government toward a plan for the unification of Canada's armed services. Brock, in this hard-hitting, brutally honest section of his memoirs, breaks his two-decade silence with an account of the bureau-cratic engineering which culminated in his forced retirement and the dismissal of a great many loyal officers of senior rank." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spines, minor soiling on top edge of text block of vol. I, tiny dent on bottom of text block of vol. II. Dust jackets have light to moderate edge wear, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, vol. II is sprice-clipped.

London William Kimber 1974 0718303733 / 9780718303730 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 8 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with cartoons in black, white, blue and red. "Records of World War II are incomplete without a tribute to the 'Fighting Services Title-Abbreviating Department', and the inspired minds therein which christened the Women's Royal Naval Service the WRENS. Surely the dedicated brood - such invaluable handmaidens to Britannia in her wave-ruling activities - owes something to such a delightful title. Captain Jack Broome also feels indebted to the Department for enabling him to call his gay, witty book of illustrated verses about these fledglings 'Services Wrendered'. In their many roles, in dockyards, on parade grounds, driving cars, teleprinters, or motor-boats with such enthusiasm and apparent awe for naval tradition, gold braid and authority, there remained that beautifully balanced, built-in, not-so-subservient subservience." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper and on title page, slight colour fading to top edge of boards and bottom edge of spine, minor wrinkles at top of spine. Dust jacket has slight browning at edges, minor edgewear/rubbing.

"Twelve weeks with TS 'Vindicatrix' prepared young lads for a life at sea, but not for the first trip - on liner, coaster, collier or cargo boat, cruise ship, tanker or tramp steamer. Often bullied, invariably seasick; cold, wet, hungry and initially miserable, most matured to become old hands - stewards, cooks or sometimes Master. Others swore never to go to sea again, and over four hundred lost their young lives for their country. Many became Distressed Seamen, yet survived. Some were torpedoed, sometimes more than once; some found themselves in prison camps. Others sailed to exotic places and met strange people. A few jumped ship and several fell overboard. Some were pushed. Most of them had strange experiences, saw far flung lands, and made lifetime friends. Many fell in love with the sea while some hated it but it earnt the respect of them all. Most express few regrets and all those in this book remember it well - that first trip as a graduate Vindi-boy, untried, uncertain and just a little afraid. This is the sum of the maiden voyages of over fifty Vindi-boys, who learnt their trade with the old lady of Sharpness between 1939 and 1966." (This book) describes the RCN's long, challenging journey from the outbreak of the war in September 1939 to the momentous events of Spring 1943. Base d on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, (it) describes the mobilization of the naval service during the first half of the war, measures its response to the demanding, ever-changing strategic situations that con f r o nted the Allies, and analyses the service of our ships and sailors on the North Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean seas as well as the defence of Canadian waters. McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." Very light browning to edges of text block, small bump to top of front hinge, minor erinkling at top/bottom of spine. Brockhampton, London, 1999, reprint.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199275 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The U-boat, the submarine of the German Navy, was a hidden predator, which would steal up on its prey out of sight beneath the waves. T he tactics were much like the wild wolf of the forest, whose grey camouflage would keep it out of sight until it chose to attack. Just as the wolf was even more effective when it roamed in groups, cornering its quarry before catching it, so A d m i r a l Karl Donitz chose to use the grey hulls of his submarines in packs - 'wolf packs'. This simple yet stunningly successful tactic came very close to winning the Battle of the Atlantic and inflicted huge losses of Allied merchant and nava l ve ss el s a nd their crews. With the packs dispersing after an attack as quickly as they had gathered for it, defence against the strategy was fraught with difficulty and only the U-boats' inability to wage their warfare without surfacing gave th e A lli es a ch a nce of fighting back. In this empathetic and deeply researched volume, (the author) delves beneath the myths and legends of submarinal action and convoy protection to discuss the realities of wolf pack deployment. He explains wha t ca used Do ni tz to employ the plan and how close his scheme came to destroying Allied resistance. It is an account of a remarkable naval tactic, cunningly used with great brutality by men who themselves withstood awesome deprivation, secur ing the a dulat ion of the ir nation."
