Michael Joseph, London, 1954, second printing.
275 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "John Wetherell was a native of Whitby, one of the thirteen children of Nathan Wetherell, a whaling captain. He was born in 1780, and his father died in 1789 - ki lled, according to Wetherell, in a skirmish with Eskimos in Davis Strait. Wetherell himself died, probably in New York, sometime after 1834. He left behind him an autobiography, in three volumes of manuscript amounting altogether to a thous a n d p a g es. It had been the object of a fruitless search by students of the period until, a few years ago, Mrs Anne Klein of New York, an enthusiastic collector of rare nautical books, discovered it at the New York auction of the library of th e la te Ga br ie l Wells." 4 Deane, Anthony. Dust jacket art by Geoff Hunt. NELSON'S FAVOURITE: HMS AGAMEMNON AT WAR 1781-1809.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 184067430X Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, maps. "This compelling narrative recounts the 28-year career of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship of the line which became one of the most famous vessels of the Royal Navy, commanded between 1793 and 1796 by Nelson, who always referred to her as his favourite ship. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at th e c e n t r e of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Ma l do na do B ay , off the coast of present-day Uruguay. This fascinating account of Agamemnon's career highlights all the significant events of the period and portrays the authentic world of the Nelsonic era." London Caxton 2002 1840671645 / 9781840671643 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
430 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A) chronicle of shipping disasters during the last great war of the age of sail, based almost exclusively on the reporting of the time. Listed are some fifteen hundred ships, vessels naval and mercantile, of many nations whose tribulations were covered in the national and local newspapers as well as the specialist press like the 'Naval Chronicle'. These reports run the whole gamut of maritime tragedies - the bizarre, curious and quirky, as well as the familiar - and in all their inconsequential detail. Through the medium of the reporting of the time, what is here presented is a truly contemporary perspective of events, in itself a fascinating revelation of the mores and attitutudes of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Given the sheer number of craft lost at sea, it cannot be entirely exhaustive, but no other book contains so much non-technical information on the maritime disasters of the period 1793-1815." Creases at bottom edge of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear.

Conway Maritime Press, London, 1988.
178 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. ISBN 0851774776 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, drawings, colour plates. "Contrary to popular opinion, the defeat of the Armada was not the end of the Spanish Navy as a major maritime power. Indeed it underwent a real renaissance in the eighteenth century, and at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars was the third largest navy in the world. Its ships were well designed and superbly built, and were officered by brave and dedicated professionals, who were nowhere near as ineffective in combat as often represented. This is the first English language book to look at Spanish naval forces in the century before Trafalgar, an d p r o v i des a long overdue reassessment of the aims and achievements of the service. Following a brief overview of the factors which shaped development and the main maritime events, more detailed chapters cover Spanish warship design and const ru c ti on , an d the much-maligned officer corps, concluding with sections on the battle itself and its significance to Spain....It is illustrated throughout with contemporary plans, paintings and ship models, and will prove stimulating reading for la ym an and s pec ia list alike." "(D)escribes in detail the composition and evolution of the British Army and its Allied foreign contingents, from the earliest campaigns of the French Revolutionary Wars until the final triumph at Waterloo. All aspects are covered, from the life of the ordinary redcoat to weaponry, tactics, administration, the supporting servic es at home and the numerous 'foreign corps'; and to the military genius of Wellington himself, all of which are supported by lavish illustrations. An account of all the campaigns undertaken from the first landing in the Netherlands in 1793 to Wat e r loo show how this army was employed, including not only the famous episodes of the Peninsular War but such little-regarded expeditions as those to South America in 1806, to Denmark, Egypt, the Cape and North America, and in India where Wellingto n ga ined his first victories. Full coverage is also accorded the Royal Navy and its invaluable services, not only in combat but in the less-glamorous but no less important duties of blockade and support for the military campaigns: in effect, a com pl ete study of 'the most complete machine'." 8 Lloyd, Christopher. ST VINCENT & CAMPERDOWN. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The year 1797 witnessed two of the greatest victories in British naval history: St. Vincent and Camperdown. These battles were of decisive importance in the war against revolutionary France since the defeat of the Spanish Fleet in February, and of the Dutch Fleet eight months later, effectively frustrated the French 'Grand Strategy' of invading Ireland and England. An attempt, inspired by the Irish patriot, Wolfe Tone, had been made at the end of the previous year to land a French force in Bantry Bay, but it was a blizzard, rather than the efforts of the English navy, which forced the enemy fleet to return to Brest. The British were lucky on that occasion. They were luckier still in the spring of 1797 when the naval mutinies at Spithead, Yarmouth and the Nore had none of the disastrous consequences which might so easily have followed. (This) account gains immeasurably because the engagements are seen in the strategic context of the war. The battles themselves are described with that understanding of the personalities of the commanders, and of the tactics of their fleets, which might be expected from a professor of the Royal Navy College, Greenwich. The British admirals and their captains bear names which will always be memorable in naval history: Jervis, Nelson, Troubridge, Collingwood, Saumarez, Duncan, the notorious Bligh. These men, and the parts which they played become living to the reader through eye-witness accounts, some of them previously unpublished." Very light browning to edges of text block, bump at top corner of boards - tiny bump at bottom corner, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown. Dust jacket is peice clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds

MEN-OF-WAR. LIFE IN NELSON'S NAVY., Patrick O'Brian.
9 Patrick O'Brian. MEN-OF-WAR. LIFE IN NELSON'S NAVY.
W.W. Norton, New York, 1995, first American edition.
95 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0393038580 "This richly illustrated book offers a concise overview of the historical background to Patrick O'Brian's acclaimed Aubrey/Maturin series, a straightforward exploration of wha t daily life in Nelson's navy was really like for everyone from the captain to the rawest recruit. What did they eat? What songs did they sing? What was the schedule of the watches? What was the division of prize money to offices and crew ? H o w did these men end up at sea in the first place? These questions and many more are answered in O'Brian's elegant narrative, which includes wonderful anecdotal material on the battles and commanders that established Britain's naval supremac y. L in e d rawings and charts help us to understand the construction and rigging of the great ships, the types and disposition of the guns, and how they were operated in battle. Contemporary drawings and cartoons illustrate aspects of naval life fr o m t he pr es s gang to the scullery. Finally, a generous selection of full-color paintings renders the majesty and the excitement of fleet actions in the age of fighting sail. Any Aubrey/Maturin reader determined to learn the locations of t he o rl o p an d t he miz enmast, the etiquette of epaulettes, or the range of a 32-pounder will delight in this invaluable reference companion to O'Brian's majestic series." 186 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "The corvette 'La Vaillante' was built in Bayonne in 1796, four years after the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1798, she was captured by Captain Sir Edward Pellew, renamed the 'Danae' an d given a new young captain, Lord Proby. In March 1800, there was consternation in London when The Times reported the French recapture of the 'Danae' following a mutiny among her crew. Dudley Pope...has pieced together the story of the muti n y f r o m British documents and the French naval archives at Brest, where the file is labelled 'Le Diable Lui-meme' - The Devil Himself. How did the French regain possession of their captured corvette? Why did some of Lord Proby's crew risk ha ng in g b y st ag ing a mutiny? What happened to the captain after the French took him prisoner? What became of the guilty men? What was the role of the Americans on board the ship? 12 Price, Anthony. THE EYES OF THE FLEET: A POPULAR HISTORY OF FRIGATES AND FRIGATE CAPTAINS 1793-1815.
Hutchinson, London, 1990, first edition.
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091746388 B&w plates. "Frigates, in their classical wooden form, only existed as a class of warship for a century (c1750-1850). As fast scouting cruisers, they were - again in Nelson 's words ' - 'the eyes of the Fleet'. But they were much more than that: as true fighting-ships, lightly-built but heavily-armed, they were also the maids-of-all-work of the British navy, ready for every task short of joining in those great s e t - p i e ce fleet battles which were the preserve of the ships-of-the-line like Nelson's 'Victory'. Yet Nelson's own first command as a fully-fledged captain was of a frigate: for every young officer, command of such a ship was the essential f ir st s te p to wa rds fame and admiral's rank. And in such a ship a young captain could become a millionaire - and even a Jack Tar could win the equivalent of 16 years' pay in an afternoon. (This) is the story of the frigate's evolution and high da ys, to ld la rge ly through the overlapping careers of a succession of some of the most famous - and infamous - frigate captains and set against the 22-year drama of the last of the great 'French Wars'." 383 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 030435659X "The life of Thomas, Lord Cochrane was more extraordinary than that of Nelson, and more than outshines his fictional counterparts, Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey. He made his name battling Napoleo n's Navy in a series of outstanding and heroic actions, often fighting his ship against seemingly overwhelming odds. His life on land was equally dramatic. As a campaigner against corruption in the Admiralty he won himself many enemies, and w a s l a ter framed in a Stock Exchange fraud. Following his imprisonment he returned to the sea and, in a series of dramatic actions again famous for their disregard of the most daunting risks, helped liberate Brazil and Chile from colonial rule . New York Macmillan 1961 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
184 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "The Glorious First of June, 1794, the first full-scale naval battle in the war with Revolutionary France, is remembered with honour, even though, strategically, it was not successful. Lord Howe defeated Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse, took six ships of the line, and sank 'Le Vengeur', without losing a single British ship, but a precious convoy, the cause of the action, reached France in safety. Although French sacrifice had not been in vain, Howe had shown that, in general combat, the British navy was incomparable. (This) is the only extensive account of the fight, and of Lord Howe's methods as an admiral, to have been written during the past century. In an Epilogue, Mr. Warner considers the subject of Sovereign's honours and awards to the Royal Navy, which in a particular sense derived from royal recognition of Howe's victory. Mr. Warner at one time served as Secretary to the Admiralty Committee on awards in time of war, and his account is authoritative."
