1 Thelwell. ANGELS ON HORSEBACK AND ELSEWHERE.
Methuen, London, 1960, reprint.
96 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w cartoons. "Thelwell really understands the English countryside, its animals and people, and can appraise with sympathetic eye both horses and the horsey. That is why his drawings adorn the studies of some of the fiercest M.F.Hs in the country as well as being sure pin-up material in many Pony Club Members' dens. The angels in (this book) are children, but there is plenty here about their parents. For both readers of 'Punch' and the 'News Chronicle' who know Thelwell, and those who have not met him before, this book is a savoury at all times - but especially after attending a gymkhana." Full of the characteristic Thelwell ponies and riders as well as other views of rural life, fox hunting, etc. Light edge wear, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small label from bookstore on rear pastedown. Dust jacket has small chips and tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - archivally taped an d n o w in mylar sleeve, light soiling, light edge wrinkling, slight browning. Very Good/Good

2 Thelwell, Norman. WRESTLING WITH A PENCIL: THE LIFE OF A FREELANCE ARTIST.
Methuen, London, 1986, first edition.
192 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0413593207 Pictorial endpapers, beautifully and profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "For over twenty-five years Norman Thelwell's cartoons, drawings and landscape paintings have de lighted millions of people all over the world. His drawings of sporting pursuits, of human beings at play and of many other countryside subjects are the product of a unique comic genius; the term 'Thelwell pony' has passed into the English l a n g u a g e . Now Norman Thelwell has written an account of his life from early childhood to the present. For the first time he opens up his experiences as an artist and humorist, in an informal, accessible and entertaining way. He describes hi s ea rl y lo ve o f drawing, the development of his skills in the war, his training at art school, his career as a teacher and a newspaper cartoonist and his subsequent life as a freelance artist. He discusses his work for 'Punch', the development o f h is id eas , h is techniques, the marking of his books and his other projects. (This) is also a personal story: of his childhood in Birkenhead; his experiences as a soldier in Britain and India during and after the war; his family; his home l ife in Ham psh ire; the pe ople he has met; the houses he has restored. This mixture of personal and professional reminiscence is rich in anecdote and makes a lively and often amusing story. It is accompanied by a wide range of colour and black -and -whi te i llus trati ons. In addition to the cartoons for which he is famous there are selections from his work as a serious landscape painter and samples from a lifetime of sketchbooks...." Tiny white mark on rear board, very minor edge wear . Du st ja cket has v ery mi nor e dge wear, light wrinkling at top of spine and flaps, very minor rubbing, 1" line indentation on spine.
