Scannell, Vernon. ARGUMENT OF KINGS. Robson, London, 1987, first edition. 254 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0860514447 "Perhaps Scannell was not well suited to army life, though his experience of it was varied: while serving with the Gordon Highlanders, he deserted 'in a forward area' in North Afri ca, was caught and sent to one of the harshest penal institutions, a Military Prison in Alexandria. Released on a Suspended Sentence, he took part in the D-Day landings in Normandy, was later wounded, and ended up in a military hospital near W a r r i n gton where he experienced a romantic interlude of both lyric and comic poignancy. Scannell is considered to be one of the best poets of the Second World War, and has written widely about the period in both prose and verse, yet there have be en c ru ci al aspects of his war experience he has not revealed until now. In this book, he presents himself as the young soldier John Bain (his name until he changed it in 1945) because he feels that in the forty or so years that have elapsed sin ce the se eve nts took place, he has become someone quite other than the 21-year-old whose adventures he relates. This true story is exciting, moving and, at times, funny; and we believe it to be a unique record of important aspects of war abou t wh ich lit tle has been previously written and certainly nothing to compare with the power and originality of 'Argument of Kings'." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine, slight fa ding to c olor on s pine, minor rubbing, crease down rear flap.
