1 Metson, Graham, comp./ed. With Cheryl Lean. (Eric Hutton, Victor Oland, Leslie Roberts, Helen Creighton, Terence Robertson, et al.) AN EAST COAST PORT...HALIFAX AT WAR 1939-1945.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1981.
157 pp, 10 7/8" H, soft cover. ISBN 0075484188 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. " 'An East Coast Port' was a familiar phrase to Canadians in the Second World War. It was the newspaper byline used, for reasons of secrecy, on stories ab out the North Atlantic convoys, and it almost always meant Halifax or one of the other smaller Maritime ports. The Second World War was a period that Haligonians alive then will never forget. Halifax was the chief convoy port and a vital part o f t he war effort. Filled with sailors and soldiers, caring for the survivors of ships torpedoed sometimes just beyond the harbour gates, repairing the damaged vessels that limped into port, Halifax was Canada's only front-line city. This book of p h ot ographs, interviews, articles and anecdotes recaptures that unique period in Halifax's history....From the first blows of the war to the notorious VE Day riots at war's end and the arrival of the war brides, the book is a nostalgic and f a sci nat in g a ccount of Halifax in wartime." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - hinge creases, very light edge wear, one small corner crease, light browning on spine, one spine crease. Very Good-

Evans Brothers, London, 1956, first edition.
216 pp, 8vo (8 11/16"H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "According to an Admiralty statement, the Battle of the Atlantic, which raged for five and a half years, was 'the most protracted and bitterly fought campaign in which the Britis h Empire and her Allies have ever been engaged'. That this battle was finally and triumphantly won was the direct result of the offensive tactics of the Navy's 'little ships', inspired by the brilliant exploits of one man who, the Admiralty sta t e d , 'did more to free the Atlantic of the U-Boat menace than any other single officer'. Here is this man's story - the life and death of Captain Frederick John Walker, R.N., Companion of the Order of the Bath, and holder of the D.S.O. and thre e Ba rs . Working with the complete co-operation of Captain Walker's family and with full access to private papers and diaries, the author traces the career of this indomitable sailor from his early years as a midshipman in H.M.S. Ajax to his last vo yag e i n the sloop Starling. This is a magnificent and inspiring record of devotion to duty and unfaltering courage. (The author) tells in vivid, authentic detail the unrelenting struggle waged by Captain Walker and the men under his command t o b eat the me nace of the German U-Boat."
