1 Skidelsky, Robert. OSWALD MOSLEY.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1975.
578 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0030865808 B&w plates. "The theme of Robert Skidelsky's brilliant biography is one of double tragedy - the self-destruction of Mosley and the failure of the British ruling class to meet the challenge of the twentieth-century. Describing Mosley's early life, Mr Skidelsky lays particular stress on his landed background and his experiences in the trenches during the first world war, both vital factors in forming his character and outlook . There follows his meteoric political rise in the 1920s, when as one of the few politicians who became 'Keynesians' he seemed more than anyone to have grasped the economic problems facing Britain. Frustrated and disillusioned by Ramsay Mac D o n a l d ' s leadership, he resigned from the Labour Government in 1930 at the age of thirty-four and founded first the short-lived New Party, then the British Union of Fascists. (The author) describes Mosley's turbulent career in the 1930s when t he B UF ' to ok politics into the streets', his period in prison during the war as 'Churchill's guest', and finally his present view of world problems. Mr Skidelsky squarely confronts Mosley's most controversial fascist activities: the great ral lie s a nd mar che s w hich often led to violence; his attack on the Jews and his campaign in the East End of London; and his opposition to the second world war which ended with his detention under Regulartion 18B. Drawing extensively on hither to u npub lish ed Cabi net Pape rs and police reports (including those of the Special Branch), the author skilfully disentangles fact from mythology, and presents for the first time the full evidence on which an informed judgment on Mosley's motives and respo nsibi lit y in thes e mat ters can be based; as well as shedding a new and unexpected light on police and government attitudes to fascism in the 1930s...." Minor soft crease at fore-edge page approx. pages 353 to 383, a few light soiling mark s on f ore-ed ge o f tex tbloc k, min or edge wear, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
