B&w illus. ISBN 0771061560 "In this exciting collection of rediscovered tales - none of which have been available since its original publication (in newspaper or magazine) - L.M. Montgomery has b rought to life a multitude of characters who share not only Anne's initial loneliness and vulnerability but also her spunkiness and charm. Their stories are told in Montgomery's own inimitable, heart-warming style. This important new collection r e claims at last a long-lost part of our rich literary heritage. Never before have these charming and poignant tales of orphans been assembled within one cover. Admirers of Montgomery will treasure this anthology; it reflects her personal experie nc e of loneliness and lovelessness, and her bittersweet memories of adversity overcome." "Of the nineteen stories in this collection, only seven are about children. There are school girls alone in the world, middle-aged men and women with no one to care for, and older men and women whose lives are empty of love and family. In keeping with her longing for a happier life for herself, Montgomery finds warm and loving homes for all her lonely characters." Minor rub and a tiny dint on rear b oard . Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE. University of Toronto Press, Toronto, (1993). 275 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0802074618 "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic invers ions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and expe r ience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright. Near Fine Price:

Gillen, Mollie. (Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE WHEEL OF THINGS: A BIOGRAPHY OF L.M. MONTGOMERY, AUTHOR OF ANNE OF GREEN GABLES. Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Don Mills, Ontario, 1975. 200 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0889020183 B&w photographs. "L.M. Montgomery is known to millions of fans the world over as the creator of Canada's most famous redhead, Anne of Green Gables. Yet despite her literary fame, Maud Montgomery is little known as a person....'Anne', of course, is not autobiographical, but it is hard not to believe that the trials and tribulations of that spunky little orphan do not reveal the inner longings and aspirations of the M a u d Montgomery who was born in the tiny P.E.I. village of Clifton in 1874, and grew up in Cavendish, on the north shore of the island. Nor did Maud Montgomery offer the world an alternative vision of herself; she always avoided talking publicly a bo ut herself in any depth or detail. Fortunately, during most of her lifetime she carried on a private correspondence with two men - true kindred spirits - Ephraim Weber, a schoolteacher in Saskatchewan, and George Boyd MacMillan, a journalist in Al loa , Scotland. The Weber letters have long been lodged in the Public Archives of Canada. The MacMillan letters vanished. In a remarkable feat of literary detective work Mollie Gillen has tracked down and rescued this treasure trove of some e ight y lo ng letters from its dusty resting place - a trunk which had passed into the possession of MacMillan's nephew. The Maud Montgomery revealed by the MacMillan letters is a complex, contradictory figure. A self-reliant young woman who succes sfull y tri ed her hand at both teaching and journalism, she abandoned her independent existence and returned to the rural isolation of Cavendish to care for her widowed grandmother through thirteen long years. A sensitive poet, she was also a hard boiled profe ssional writer who knew how to grit her teeth and produce for the market - and rejoice when the cheque came in. A passionate free spirit, she married Presbyterian minister Ewan Macdonald and imposed on herself the strict and confining role o f minis ter's wife. L.M. Montgomery has contributed unforgettable characters and images to the pages of....literature. With this study, (she) takes her proper place in the pages of Canadian - and world - literary biography. Christmas gift inscrip tion on free front endpaper, tiny stain at bottom fore-edge of pages 41 to 44 and on first two picture pages, light edge wear, two tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has minor edge wear , light e dge wrin kling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, 2" very light line indentation on rear panel, minor browning to edges of flaps.
