1 Lapa, Maia. MEMORIES LINGER ON.
Vantage, New York, 1975, first edition.
51 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "The tranquil routine of working and playing on her family's farm and attending school was suddenly upset for Maia Lapa in 1940 when the Russians occupied her native Latvia. 'Little by little', sh e recalls, 'they started to make life miserable for us by dictating what to do and what not to do, what to say or hear and what not to say or hear, where to go and where not to go, whom to meet and whom not to meet. Our freedom was gone and w i t h i t all the fun in life.' In pursuit of freedom, the author, along with other Latvians, traveled to war-torn Germany where she ultimately completed her high school education after the war's end. From Germany, she sailed to Canada where she o bt ai n ed e mployment first as a waitress, then food researcher, and finally, after completing college, dentist. When the author, by this time married and pursuing an enjoyable career, returns to her homeland, she is confronted with memories b oth pl eas an t a nd bitter, and is reminded of the dismal prospects for her land's future. In this fast-moving autobiography, Maia Lapa gives a step-by-step descritpion of what it means for an independent, freedom-loving spirit to grow up in wart ime and how, in her ca se, determination to seek a better life bore fruit. At the same time, she reminds the reader of the obstacles that even today are standing in the way of some individuals wishing to improve their lot in life."
