Munson, Kenneth. Illustrated by John W. Wood, with Norman Dinnage, William Hobson, Alan Holliday, Tony Mitchell, Allen Randall. BOMBERS, PATROL AND RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT, 1914-1919. Blandford, London, 1968, first edition. 180 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. Colour plates. "Bombs were dropped from an aeroplane at least as early as November 1911, nearly three years before the outbreak of the First World War, and hence the bomber may claim to ante-date the fi ghter aeroplane as a weapon of war. At any rate, while there were no true fighters in existence in August 1914, there were bombers - from the frail Voisins of France to the giant four-engined Russian Ilya Mourometz. The ensuing four years of w a r p rovided a forcing-ground for such outstanding and varied bomber designs as the Gotha Grossflugzeuge, the Breguet 14 and the Handley Page O/400; and the submarine menace spurred development of the flying boat patrol bomber, culminating in the fi rs t -c lass Felixstowe designs. Throughout the war the evolution of reconnaissance aircraft progressed to the extent that, to succeed the frail, defenceless Taube and Albatros machines of 1914, armed 2-seaters were evolved that in 1918 could ou t-f ly an d o ut-climb some of the ablest fighters in the service. The 66 aircraft in this volume reflect the development of such aircraft throughout the first truly formative period of military aviation history. The period 1914-19 is selected so as t o i ncl ude certain important types designed during the war, but which arrived too late for combat service." Small puncture/crease (archivally taped) or tiny dint from page 111 to 133, cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of pages and text bloc k. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has two small chips and some tiny edge tears, light edge wear/wrinkling, browning on spine and flap-folds - lighter elsewhere. Good/Good Price:

Munson, Kenneth. Illustrated by John W. Wood, Norman Dinnage, Frank Friend, Brian Hiley, William Hobson, Tony Mitchell & Jack Pelling. FIGHTERS BETWEEN THE WARS, 1919-39 INCLUDING ATTACK AND TRAINING AIRCRAFT. THE POCKET ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORLD AIRCRAFT IN COLOR. Macmillan, New York, 1970, first edition. 164 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. Colour plates. "The twenty years spanned by this small volume saw advances in almost every aspect of military aviation. The war of 1914-18 had transformed aviation from the sport of the few into a reco gnised military force with an established industry behind it. The much-reduced budgets for peacetime air forces dictated a cautious approach to innovation; yet in these two decades aeroplane design underwent one of the biggest transformations in it s history. Rotary engines were discarded in favour of their more efficient radial and in-line counterparts; metal gradually replaced wood and fabric as the principal structural material, bringing smooth-skinned machines with semimonocoque bodies; a nd the monoplane, first ushered in by Bleriot in the first decade of the century, at last came into its own. The speeds and the armament of military aeroplanes likewise increased in proportion. Twenty of the most eventual - and colorful - years in the history of military aircraft are represented in this volume by 80 fighters, attack and training aircraft. They range from twin-gunned, rotary-engined fighters like the Sopwith Snipe to such sleek monoplanes as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the eight-gunned Hawker Hurricane, and are presented in the colors of many of the world's air forces, both large and small." Book slightly cocked, slight fading at top/bottom edges. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has small ghost sticker mark on front f lap, some light edge wrinkling, creases at bottom edge of rear panel. Munson, Kenneth. Illustrated by John W. Wood, with Michael Baber, Norman Dinnage, William Hobson, Alan Holiday, Tony Mitchell, Allen Randall. FIGHTERS: ATTACK AND TRAINING AIRCRAFT 1914-1919. THE POCKET ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF WORLD AIRCRAFT IN COLOUR SERIES. Blandford, London, 1968, first edition. 183 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. Colour plates. "When war broke out in Europe in August 1914 there were no specialised fighters, only a handful of 'high performance scouts' whose 90 m.p.h. was 'dangerously fast', and even these carried no regular armament. By November 1918, two-gun fighters capable of 120 m.p.h. were standard, and individual designs for more specialised duties had made their appearance. The airmen and aircraft of the First World War - the first air war - ha v e a special place in history which has perhaps bcome over-glamourised. Certainly there were outstanding aeroplanes and heroic airmen, but in both the human and technical fields of aeronautical endeavour 1914-1919 was very much a period of trial a nd er ror in which, in the words of one great pioneer, 'some of were lucky and some of us weren't'. Such, too, was the expansion of the combatant air forces, once it was realised how decisive a role aircraft were playing in the overall war effo rt, th a t f or the first time on any scale organised flying training became a necessity, creating a demand for 'school' aeroplanes in ever-increasing numbers. The 80 aircraft in this volume reflect the evolution of such machines throughout the fi rst trul y form ative period of military aviation history. The period 1914-1919 is selected so as to include certain important types designed during the war, but which arrived too late for combat service." Cigarette odor, light browning to edges o f pa ges a nd text block, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wear, light browning on spine and flap-folds - very light elsewhere. Good+/Good+ Price:
