1 Oliver, Jane. NOT PEACE BUT A SWORD.
Collins, London, 1939.
541 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "Everyone knows of the sufferings of the Covenanters, but fewer of their intolerance in power, their grudging reception of the young King Charles after his father's execution at Whi tehall, and the galling discipline which made him, after his accession to the English throne, unwilling ever to visit Scotland or to tolerate Presbyterianism again. Against this background, Miss Oliver tells the story of three generations of a g r e a t Scottish family, the Humes of Polwarth, rising to play their part in the nation's affairs. Lady Polwarth, resolute Episcopalian, was broken by her diastrous passion for her young second husband, Lord Jedburgh. Her son Sir Patrick Hume d e fi ed h er to become a Covenanter, but was happier in his lifelong love for his brave, plain wife, who followed him into exile, and came back in triumph with Dutch William after his not quite bloodless revolution. Violent, too, was the caree r o f his fa mou s d aughter, Grisel, whose romantic marriage to George Baillie, son of the Covenanting martyr, brings to a sunlit close her family's part in a century's struggle for freedom of speech and thought and worship." Dust soiling to top of t ex tblo ck, ligh t wr inkling at top/bottom of spine, slight waviness to cloth on boards. Dust jacket has small tears and chips, browning to spine and some edges, light rubbing, moderate edge wrinkling, now in a mylar sleeve. Very Good-/Good
