Lees-Milne, James. BAROQUE IN ITALY. B.T. Batsford, London, 1959, first edition. 216 pp, large 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans. "(Lees-Milne writes about) the development of building in Italy from the Mannerist period, that is, the later sixteenth century, to the emergence of Rococo in the early eighteenth century. (He) believes that Baroque in Italy was a religious manifestation, Latin, Catholic and primarily Roman and his book deals largely with ecclesiastical architecture in Rome itself. Piedmont was the next most i mportant influence in the style, and so, after introducting the colossal personalities of Bernini, Borromini and their disciples, he concentrates upon the work of Guarini, Juvara and their followers. But he is not conerned exclusively with archi t e c ture; he discusses the Baroque style as it manifested itself in the work of the painters, such as Caravaggio and Pietro da Cortona and the sculptors, above all Bernini. In reading the book the reader has the grateful impression, not so much o f be in g instructed, as of sharing in the author's own pleasures and discoveries, for Mr. Lees-Milne has a winning and persuasive style exceptional in a work of learning." Small label from bookstore on front pastedown, foxing marks on front free e nd pap er, one small foxing mark on rear free endpaper, light wear at corners and top/bottom of spine. dust jacket has light edge wear wrinkling - mostly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two small tears (with crease between) on rear panel, l igh t fo xing marks on flaps and on flap-folds. Lees-Milne, James. BAROQUE IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL AND ITS ANTECEDENTS. B.T. Batsford, London, 1960, first edition. 224 pp, large 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans/elevations. "(S)tarting in the sixteenth century, author and reader begin their survey of Iberian Baroque with the Plateresque in Spain and the Manoel ine in Portugal, and continue it until, two hundred or so years later, they reach the High Baroque conclusion of Castile, Seville and Granada, and the Rococo decadence of eighteenth-century Portugal. On the way they will have examined some archi t e c tural and sculptural masterpieces of astonishing quality and individuality: the palaces or houses of Mafra, Queluz and La Granja; Santiago da Compostela, the Escorial, the Cartuja of Coimbra; sculpture at Macarena, Alcobaca and Arouca; the Tra ns pa ra nte of Toledo Cathedral, the convents of Bom Jesus, Tomar and Evora. - These, and many other churches, cathedrals, palaces and domestic buildings are illustrated in a collection of nearly 100 pictures which show, as unmistakably as Mr. Lees -Mi lne 's text, that Baroque, while it transcends frontiers, partakes as fully as any other style in regional and national characteristics."
