"The main body of the text is devoted to a complete and authorit ative alphabetical list of all the craftsmen known to have made violins or other stringed instruments as works of art in the German-speaking lands of Central Europe. It incorporates all the researches of earlier authorities, corrects some pre v i o u s misconceptions, and sheds new light not only on established figures but also on the rising generation of 20th century makers. Each of over 4,000 makers is described in a brief biography, and there are comments on the style, tone and valu e of t he ir instruments. There are over 800 photographs showing clearly the important points to look for in the work of the chief masters, and illustrating labels known to be authentic as an aid to identification, and there is an introduction ou tl ini ng the gr o wth of the major German schools...a complete historical survey of the subject, and traces the development of the craft in such famous centres as Markneukirchen, Mittenwald, the Tyrol, Vienna and Stuttgart.
