2 Mordal, Jacques. DIEPPE: THE DAWN ON DECISION.
Ryerson Press, Toronto, (1963).
285 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "Three Canadian battalions, (and) a commando unit of the Royal Marines, tried in vain to cross the Dieppe beach on which the tanks got stuck in the pebbles. With the exception of Varengeville, it was the same story on the neighbouring beaches. Ultimately the invaders had to retire, leaving more than 1200 dead and double this number of prisoners in the hands of the enemy. A costly setback? A victory offered to n o p u r p ose to enemy propaganda? A necessary experience? A political affair designed to show our Russian allies the difficulty of establishing a Second Front? All this has been said of Operation Jubilee and there is ample justification, for no o f fi ci al e xplanation is entirely satisfactory. With the help of much unpublished testimony and in the light of all available documentary evidence from both sides, Jacques Mondal has vividly recreated not only the actual battle but also the s tra te gic an d p oli tical problems that faced the Allies in the summer of 1942." Small bump to top corner of boards. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling, two tears (archivally taped) and several tiny chips along top edge, light soiling on rea r pa nel. VG /VG-
