"The first of the five sections in the book deals with royal palaces and fortresses occupied by th e Queen and members of the Royal Family, such as Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace and Windsor Castle - themselves symbols of the monarchy. Then there are vignettes of those palaces, like Hampton Court, The Tower of London and Westminster, th a t once had royal occupants. The third section covers other royal residences lived in by the Queen and members of her family, including Balmoral Castle, Sandringham House, Barnwell Manor and the Castle of Mey. The fourth section describes the va ni sh e d or ruined palaces and homes of kings and queens long dead - Bridewell, Carlton House and Nonsuch, among others. In the final section houses and castles with historic royal connections come in for appraisal; among these are Edinburgh Castl e, Bro ad lands and White Lodge, Richmond Park. These observations are accompanied by notable illustrations, historical and present-day, many specially commissioned for this book. Some of the palaces, castles and homes were, like 145 Piccadilly, r oya l fo r a relatively short period. Others, like Kensington Palace, have housed members of the Royal Family for centuries. All have one thing in common: for however long a period, each has been a royal home."
