1 Holles, Robert O. NOW THRIVE THE ARMOURERS: A STORY OF ACTION WITH THE GLOUCESTERS IN KOREA (NOVEMBER 1950 - APRIL 1951).
George G. Harrap, London, 1952, first edition.
176 pp, small 8vo (7 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w map, photographs. "This is one man's story of what happened to the First Battalion of The Gloucestershire Regiment from the time it reached Korea, in November 1950, to the grim battle on the Imjin, in April 1951, which brought world fame to the unit, adding new lustre to Colours already covered with Battle Honours. The author, a Regular soldier, served as a Sergeant with the Gloucesters in Korea, and he gives a graphic, v i g o r o u s portrayal of what he saw, and of the fortunes and hazards he shared with his comrades of the Regiment. His story is completely factual, but out of consideration for the feelings of those who lost relatives during the fighting, ficti ti ou s na me s ar e ascribed to members of the Platoon whose experiences reflect the course of events for the Gloucesters as a whole. The terrain is admirably described, and the plight of the civilians unforgettably evoked. Sergeant Holles captur es in hi s p rec is e, restrained writing the deep-seated resentment of the British soldier at his own impotence when confronted with the results of man's inhumanity to man...." Previous owner's small stamp on each of the front endpapers, erased pe nci l m ark s an d ti ny soi ling marks at top of front inside hinge, minor soiling on top of textblock, light edge wear, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has several small tears with creases - two archivally taped, a f ew t iny to sm all c hip s, o ld tape residue on inside bottom edge, light rubbing and minor soiling on rear panel.
