Hoig, Stan. THE SAND CREEK MASSACRE. University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, (1974), second printing. 217 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, map. "In the fall of 1864, following a summer's outbreak of war between the Indians and the whites in Kansas and Colorado Territory, a band composed of Cheyennes led by Chi efs Black Kettle, White Antelope, Standing Water, One Eye, and others, and Arapahoes commanded by Chief Left Hand came to make peace with the whites. They were ordered to a camp site on remote Sand Creek, forty miles above Fort Lyon in southeaste r n Colorado Territory. In the early morning hours of November 29, 1964, the Cheyenne and Arapaho village was attacked by troops under the command of Colonel John M. Chivington, a former minister. Sometimes called 'The Chivington Massacre' by tho se w ho would emphasize his responsibility for the attack and 'The Battle of Sand Creek' by those who would imply that it was not a massacre, this event has become one of our nation's most controversial Indian conflicts. The subject of army and Co ngr ess ional investigations and inquiries, a matter of vigorous newspaper debates, the object of much oratory and writing extremely biased in both directions, the incident itself rife with bitter conflict between the white men who were involved, th e Sa nd C reek Massacre very likely will never be completely and satisfactorily resolved. This account of the massacre investigates the historical events leading to the battle, tracing the growth of the Indian-white conflict in Colorado Territory.. ."
