Hogg, Ian V. ARMOUR IN CONFLICT: THE DESIGN AND TACTICS OF ARMOURED FIGHTING VEHICLES. Jane's, London, 1980, first edition. 208 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0710600011 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. "....graphically describes the international technical development of the tank placing this firmly in the context of evolving tactical systems. From the first deployment on the Somme in 1916, through the peace-time theories of all-tank armies and battle fleets of tanks, to World War II and beyond, the interplay of engineers and soldiers is traced, with the c r ucial points of Cambrai, Kursk and the Sinai acting as signposts. To make this account truly comprehensive the author has also described in detail suspension systems, ammunition, anti-tank weapons and the many specialised vehicles designed part ic ul arly for D-Day: flail tanks to beat a path through beach minefields, tanks to climb walls, cross ditches, build bridges, act as mobile flamethrowers and to float and propel themselves ashore. The tanks of today, with their sophisticated elect ron ic aids, are very different from the boilerplate monstrosities of World War I. But the discussion continues. Now the tank is at another turning point as military experts begin to question its function and ask whether, perhaps, a new concept of arm our ed vehicles is needed to survive on the modern battlefield."
