1 Marcus, Geoffrey. BEFORE THE LAMPS WENT OUT.
George Allen & Unwin, London, 1965, second impression.
328 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "December 25th, 1913, was the last Christmas of the long general peace, following on Napoleon's overthrow nearly 100 years earlier. Great Britain was still the great World Power. To her, as in past centuries, belonged the empire of the Ocean....an Empire upon which, according to the proud boast of her people, the sun never set. It was the final phase of a great and splendid era of our history, whose essential pictures were ord er, stability, and unprecedented progress in many and diverse fields of human activity. Against the infinitely varied and richly coloured background of English social life at this preiod, the author portrays the fast-mounting tension of the Iri s h i mbroglio which, during the spring and summer of 1914, had brought the United Kingdom to the very brink of civil war - until in the end the climax of the ferocious party quarrel raging at home merged in the international crisis arising out of th e m ur der of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, in Sarajevo. Shortly after, towards the end of July, there ensued the most dramatic and appalling twelve days within living memory, culminanting in what the Uni ted S ta tes Ambassador, Walter H. Page, described as 'the Grand Smash' and at whose approach the British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, uttered the pregnant words 'The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them again in our life tim e'. " L ight wrinkling at bottom of the spine, 1" printing ink mark at bottom corner of pages 70 & 71. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small tear - taped, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good
