When an epidemic of influenza struck the nearby Chipeweyan Indian camp and hospitalized A n gus Macnair, the boys were determined to bring back the valuable Viking relics and use the money from their sale to buy desperately needed supplies. The three boys and Angeline, Awasin's sister, whom they are reluctant to take but cannot leave be hi nd, begin the perilous journey north by dog sled. 7 Mowat, Farley. THE REGIMENT.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1973, second edition.
317 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771065752 Maps/battle plans. "Here is the true and powerfully told story of the 'Hasty P's' - the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment of 'plough jockeys' who came off farms in the Ontario counties of the same names, to fight in World War II. Author Farley Mowat was there, serving as platoon commanders and later an Intelligence Officer in England, Sicily and through much of the Italian campaign. His first-hand memories of the Regiment's exploits speak eloquently to all who have known the cameraderie, horror, heroism and the tragedy of battle. He reinforced those memories through extensive interviews with veterans of the Regiment, after himself retracing the 'Hasty P's' movements through Britain, Sicily, Italy and northwest Europe. His prose brings alive the characters, situations and memorable combat actions in vivid detail. There is the famous Dover Dash in June of 1940, the landing on Sicily in assault boats in June of 1943 and the invasion of Italy in September of that year; the 1944 drive toward Rome, and the Regiment's finest hour in May that year when it broke through the Hitler Line. He relives the bitter battle of San Maria; the desperat hours when the Regiment was assigned a river crossing that the whole Third Brigade hadn't been able to manage; the horrible tragedy of allied artillery falling short at the Lamone bridgehead and killing the Regiment's own men; the later, epic stand along the Naviglio Canal." Minor faint scuff on top of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light browning on edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has small/tiny chips at top of spine and flap-folds, light to moderate edge wear, a few very small edge tears, small areas of rubbing causing some color loss. McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, (1955), Ist edtion.
312 pp, 8vo (9" high), hard cover in 'FACSIMILE' dust jacket. B&w maps. "Mowat has taken the bare bones of regimental history and built around them a magnificent documentary of a Canadian regiment, a story that stirs and shakes and sometimes shames the Canadian reader. The Regiment is the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, with headquarters in the quiet little Ontario bay town of Picton...This is an infantry regiment and this is a story of infantrymen...Mowat didn't just write from records and memory (he was the battalion's intelligence officer). He went back, in the quiet aftermath of the wreckage of war, and retraced the steps of this regiment of infantry - in Britain, in Sicily, in Italy, in northwest Europe. His masterful handling of the descriptive pieces, of atmosphere bear witness to this research."
