"One of the most glittering of the glittering ornaments of his generation at Eton and Oxford, all the great prizes seemed within reach of the young Ronald Arbuthnott Knox. Then came war, his friends fell i n battle, and in 1917 Ronald, by now Anglican Chaplain at Trinity College, became a Roman Catholic. There followed years in the shadows as he came to grips with the ethos of the Catholics, until he emerged again in Oxford in 1926 as Roman Catholi c Chaplain.
