Eksteins, Modris. RITES OF SPRING: THE GREAT WAR AND THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN AGE. Bantam, London, 1989. 396 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. ISBN 0593018621 "(D)escribes the origins, the impact and the aftermath of the Great War of 1914-1918, the supremely traumatic event of our century. On May 29, 1913, in Paris, t he most shocking artistic event of the age ignited a new attitude toward the future. It was the premiere performance of Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring', produced by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. This ritual dance of death, which provoked scenes of near-riot that first night, quickly began to be accepted as a scenario for a new era. Everywhere intellectuals and artists were clamouring for something new, a 'purification' of the world. Fifteen months later, in a frenzy of passion for newness, vast crowds in Europe's capital cities were howling for war, while some, like Hermann Hesse and Adolf Hitler, acclaimed the arrival of a new world. Soon enough Europe came to appreciate the full horror of a new kind of devastation. Four years of trench warfare achieved the promised end. 'All changed, changed utterly', as W.B. Yeats would write: 'A terrible beauty is born'. Once the war had passed, a deep psychic depression settled over Europe, broken only by hysterical events: plague, rev olution, inflation, dislocation. (Eksteins) goes on to describe the strange alterations of human consciousness that the war brought about in the response to such events as Lindbergh's transatlantic flight in 1927 and the publication of the first mo dern bestseller, 'All Quiet on the Western Front', in 1928. But the Great War's ultimate effect was Hilter's version of reality, as envinced in his conduct and destruction of the Third Reich. (This book) ends with the suicide of Hitler in the spri ng of 1945 in the bunker beneath besieged Berlin - while, in the cafeteria, his officers danced." Light cigarette smoke odor, several small scuffs and rub marks on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few small/tiny very light sta ins on edges of text block, tiny dint on fore-edge of text block.
