"This is the first book devoted to Naples and its surrounding country written since the war - a full guide to all the changes brought about by the war not only in Naples and the churches but in the vast majority of the other towns of Campania. (C)overs the whole of Campania, including Gaeta, Terracina, Amalfi, Salerno, Paestum, Benevento and Montecassino. All this great province, and not least its capital, Naples, suffered very severely in the late war. In Naples alone forty or more churches were damaged, and the cathedrals of most of the provincial cities were bombed. Since the war a new museum and national picture gallery of a hundred rooms has been ope n ed in the great Bourbon Palace of Capo di Monte. All this has been carefully noted, but the book is mainly concerned with the beauty of the Neapolitan countryside, the marvels of the Phlegrean Fields, the Virgilian Grotto and the Cave of the Siby l revealed by Professor Maiuri at Cumae, with Pompeii, with the newly built abbey of Montecassiono and the not less famous Montevergine, four thousand feet up in the mountains, with Capri and Norman Douglas and the last stand of the Bourbons in 1861 i n the headland fortress of Gaeta."
