He fell in love with the country, its people and customs, and stayed there until his death in 1946. McPherson was a born storyteller. In the letters he wrote home, from which this selection has been made, he not only itemised his own life but illumined the history of his time. In Cairo as a teacher, he used his long holida y s t o travel all over the Middle East and Asia Minor.
