1 Spettigue, Douglas. THE FRIENDLY FORCE.
Longmans, Green, Toronto, n.d.
134 pp, 8vo (8 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "...tells the story of one of the world's most famous police forces - the Royal Canadian Mounted Police...The opening chapters tell how, under the name Northwest Mounted Police, the Force was formed in 1873, and describes its stirring exploits in the early days of the West. Mr. Spettigue then takes us to the school at Rockcliffe, where recruits...undergo the rigorous training that will fit them for the strenuous duties to come...We are taken on a tour of the fabulous Identification Branch in Ottawa...We visit laboratories where scrapings of blood, samples of hair, or tiny bits of cloth are examined microscopically to provide evidence that may convict or free a suspec t; where bullets are inspected under the comparison microscope to determine whether they were fired from the sme gun; where experts can tell what typewriter was used to produce an incriminating letter...we visit the Mounties on their lonely pa t r o l s of the Canadian North - taking a sick Indian to hospital, bringing news and the warmth of human companionship to isolated trappers, or tracking down a criminal across miles of wilderness. Two chapters on the Marine Division tell thrillin g ta le s of the pursuit and capture of smugglers, and of the rescue of ships in distress...The final chapter, 'On Being a Mountie', sums up what it is to be a member of the Force, and contains the inspiring story of the work that the Mounties have v olu nta ri ly u ndertaken in befriending underprivileged youths and helping to combat juvenile delinquency." Very small crease at top corner of approx. pages 20 to 65, small light soiling marki in margin of page 54, scattered tiny foxing marks o n t op o f te xtb loc k. Dust jacket has large chips, tears - some archivally taped, creases, moderate rubbing on rear panel, now in mylar sleeve. VG/Poor
