Reeman, Douglas. Wraparound cover art by Geoffrey Huband. BATTLECRUISER. Heinemann, London, 1997, 2nd printing. 275 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0434002917 "Conceived on paper as an invicible defence against enemy commerce raiders, the battlecruiser was hailed as a triumph. Romantically described as the fleet's greyhounds, the se great ships, remarkable for their size and speed, were designed to outrun and outshoot any of their heavier opponents. But the Battle of Jutland exposed their fatal flaw, the weakness of their armour, which could be pierced by a single enemy she ll. At the outbreak of World War II, only four of their class remain. In 1943, when Captain Guy Sherbrooke joins H.M.S. Reliant, he knows he may be her last captain. The battlecruisers Hood and Repulse, household names, have been destroyed. But Reliant is both legend and survivor, a lucky ship, and as Britain prepares to invade occupied Europe one of the last battlecruisers must enter the conflagration. And Sherbrooke, who commands her destiny, cannot alter the bitter truth: that for one of her ill-fated class there can be no half-measures. Only death or glory awaits H.M.S. Reliant." ISBN 0091644003 Wraparound jacket art by Brian Sweet. The sixteenth Richard Bolitho novel. "With the exception of Nelson himself, the recently-knighted Bolitho is the youngest admiral on the Nav y list, but his new status sits uneasily upon his shoulders along with his new command. For the most part the officers of his hastily-formed squadron lack experience, whereas their French counterparts are well-trained and confident. And Bolitho i s a man plagued by worry about the coolness behind his recent parting with his beautiful wife Belinda. What lies ahead is the reality of war at close quarters - where Bolitho will be called upon to anticipate the overall intention of the French fl ee t. And where, not for the first time, his own human reactions and the dictates of his position will be at odds. But it is the realisation that the battle has come to a personal vendetta - between himself and the French admiral who formerly s ail ed 'Argonaute' (the captured ship Bolitho himself now commands) - that drives Bolitho and his men to a final rendezvous where no quarter is asked or given." Young, toughened, and tried in the hellish crucible of Burma, he labours, sometimes faltering , beneath the weight of tradition, the glorious heritage of his family, and the burden of his own self-doubt. For him, the horizon is not the lip of the trench seen by men of the Corps in the previous war, but the ramp of a landing craft smashing d own into the sea, and the fire of the enemy on a Sicilian beach. Here, tradition is not enough, and Mike Blackwood must find within himself qualities of leadership which will inspire those Royal Marines who are once again the first to land, and amo ng the first to die." ISBN 043401009X "January 1970, and the final chapter in the Blackwood history appears to have closed with the murder in Cyprus of Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Blackwood, and the subsequent sale of the ancestral home. Disillusioned and grieving for his distinguished father, Lieutenant Ross Blackwood believes there is no future for him in the Corps. The Royal Marines have been reduced in strength, and their role in a modern world, after so splendid a tradition, diminished to policing and paperwork. But Ross remains a Blackwood and a Royal Marine, and the loyalty and dedication of a Blackwood to the Corps sustain him from vicious guerrilla warfare in Malaysia through the moral and p o litical minefields of Northern Ireland, where one man's terrorist is another's patriot, to the South Atlantic, and a conflict as bloody as it is unpredictable. And he learns, as every Blackwood has before him, that jungle or moor, insurrection or i nvasion, mere courage is not enough. Survival and victory balance on the knife edge of destiny." Reeman, Douglas. (a.k.a. Alexander Kent.) SEND A GUNBOAT. G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1961, first American edition. 256 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover (blue-grey cloth with red lettering on spine, red illustration on front board), in dust jacket. The third novel by the author, who also writes under the pseudonym 'Alexander Kent'. "The orders from the Admiralty to The Captain were explicit. He was to take his ship and sail to the small island of Santu, which lay under threat of invasion from the Communist mainland of China, and evacuate the British colony there. The ship, however, was the flat-bottomed a ntiquated river gunboat H.M.S. Wagtail, waiting in a Hong Kong dockyard for the disgrace of the breaker's hammer to overtake her. And her captain, Justin Rolfe, embittered by the verdict of a court-martial, knew that the assignment offered more th a n escape from misery and humilitation. It was a reprieve for himself and his ship. Against the sullen resentment of his crew, and against a constant battle with his own emotions, Captain Rolfe takes the 'Wagtail' to Santu. There he finds the fa bu lously wealthy Englishman, Laker, who has built up his own private kingdom under the aegis of an aged Chinese General, both arrogantly convinced of their invulnerability. On the Island is also the dedicated Dr. Felton, who runs a mission for the ha lf-starved natives, and his attractive sister. Word comes that the Communist planes and ships are moving swiftly against Santu. The English must leave. Laker and his entourage refuse and must be forced at gunpoint to board ship in the midst o f th e attack. The Feltons have also refused to leave and have disappeared. The Communists land and attack, killing all in sight. Captain Rolfe must make a momentous decision to sail at once and insure the safety of those on board or endanger the ir li ves by holding off until the Feltons can be found and made to leave. 'Send a Gunboat' is a novel of concentrated tension, adventure and escape in the China Seas today." Small light stain at fore-edge of page 161/162 - migarates into adjacen t page s, one tiny speck on fore-edge of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock, very light rubbing to board edges, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
