1 Featherstone, Donald. Line illustrations by W.R.F. Jenkinson. BATTLES WITH MODEL SOLDIERS.
David & Charles, Newton Abbot, 1972, second impression.
215 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715349252 B&w illustrations. "Once aptly described as 'chess with a thousand pieces', wargaming can be made as complicated and elaborate as desired, or so simple that even young children can take part. This book - the ideal introduction to the hobby - explains what wargaming is all about, how armies can be assembled and how, on any reasonably-sized table, realistic engagements can be fought by tactical manoeuvring. The basic rules by which forces are moved and casualties assessed are explained, there is practical advice on making one's own soldiers and on conversions, and guidance on how to prepare and lay out realistic battlefield scenes. Another great attraction of th e w a rgaming hobby is the research it invites into famous campaigns of the past, and not the least valuable part of this book is its brief survey of warfare from earliest times to the present day. Here the military tactics of each period are cons id e re d, together with the role of the different types of soldiers and their weapons, and there is an extensive bibliography to facilitate research into specific periods of military history." Very small bump at top edge of front board, light wri nkl in g a t t op/bottom of spine, tiny light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny chips, one small tear archivally taped, light browning at inside edges. Very Good/Very Go od-

2 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
Arms and Armour, London, 1998, first edition.
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1854094491 B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size f rom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest bat t l e s during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took p la ce t he desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The America n C ivi l W ar also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vick sbur g. Oth er, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert anayses and eyewitness acc ounts ofte n e nabl es the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." 5 Featherstone, Donald. SOLO-WARGAMING.
Frederick Warne, New York, 1973, first U.S. edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 60 b&w illustrations. "Many wargamers, particularly during the early stages of their interest in the hobby, are unable to find live opponents to fight on their table-top battlefields. Their effor ts at wearing two different hats, as they manipulate both armies, and with the full knowledge of what each intends to do, soon palls. Their interest in wargaming retreats. Then there are those wargamers whose enthusiasm is so great that figh t i n g o ne, or even two, battles a week is not sufficient, and who are led to seek a means of carrying on their table-top battles when a live opponent is not available. (This book) caters to both, describing innumerable methods of manoeuvring tw o wa rg am e s armies, under such conditions of secrecy and surprise that the result of the battle is in the balance until the last cannon is fired. It opens many doors to ingenious and practical methods of doing battle with model soldiers, raising t he pas tim e in some sense almost to the level of chess. It enables the 'lonely wargamer' to find pleasure rather than boredom in his solitary state."
