1 Deakin, F.W. and Storry, G.R. THE CASE OF RICHARD SORGE.
Chatto and Windus, London, 1966, second impression.
373 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "This is the first complete and authoritative account of one of the most famous spy stories of our times, the case of the Nazi journalist, Richard Sorge, who worked undetected for year s as head of a Red Army spy ring in the Far East until he was arrested and executed in Japan during the second world war. So much mystery - and so much that is improbable but nevertheless true - surrounds the story of this half-Russian, half-Ge r m a n agent that all previous attempts to tell it have failed, producing false versions or missing much of the best material. Rejecting legend and substituting facts which are even stranger, the authors have brought evidence from new German and Ja pa ne se sources and personal interviews in several countries to their account of possibly the most successful spy who ever operated - a man who for eight years transmitted from Japan a continuous stream of the most valuable information, often d eri ved fr om the highest quarters, culminating in precise advance information of Hitler's invasion of Russia, of Japan's decision not to attack Russia in 1941, and of the near certainty of war against America that October or November instead. The boo k ha s th ree quite separate fascinations - the thrill of a spy story, unexpected and unpredictable sidelights on the history of the inter-war years, and a peculiar timeliness as a study of the prototype of the mid-twentieth century ideologica l spy , div orced fro m all national loyalties." Browning to edges of text block, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has faint erased pencil marks on front flap, light browning on spine and flap-folds, light wrin kling at top /botto m of spine and flap-folds, several small & tiny tears archivally taped, a few tiny chips, minor soiling. Very Good/Very Good-
