1 Cohen, Joseph. JOURNEY TO THE TRENCHES: THE LIFE OF ISAAC ROSENBERG 1890-1918.
Robson, London, 1992.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0860517969 B&w illustrations. "When Isaac Rosenberg was killed in action on the Western Front in April 1918, the world lost one of the most striking talents of that ill-fated generation. He differe d from Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon - the two poets with whom he is most often compared - in that his was a double-faceted gift: he was both poet and painter. Also, unlike the other celebrated war poets, he was a private in the ranks, giv i n g his poetry its particular, harrowing perspective. This moving and definitive biography is a fitting tribute to Rosenberg's tragically short life. Born to impoverished Russian Jewish immigrants, he grew up in London's East End, and only enli st ed t o escape the grinding poverty of home. After a short period in camp, he was sent straight to the Somme battlefields. Dr Cohen's study is based on an exhaustive examination of Rosenberg's drawings, paintings, prose pieces, poetry, letters an d p riv at e family papers, and a close collaboration with the poet's late sister who was for many years his literary executrix. It is a story fraught with anxious striving, unremitting deprivation and unmerited neglect - neglect which until re cent ly d ogge d h is reputation despite acclaim from a number of eminent critics, among them F R Leavis, who wrote 'genius is the word for Rosenberg'." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light fading to spine color , min or ed ge w ear, soft crease at top of front cover, minor to light soiling on edges of text block, very light rubbing. Very Good
