"When Britain's railways were nationalised in 1948 more than nineteen thousand steam locomotives were taken over from the private companies, and the manufact ure of steam locomotives continued until 1960. This book describes the principal classes of steam locomotives working actively i n Britain between 1948 and 1968, with emphasis on those types of which examples have been preserved. The author discusses the engines under the headings express, mixed traffic, tank and freight locomotives, comparing designs inherited from the GWR , L MSR, LNER and SR with the subsequent BR Standard classes.
