"(A) study of how the British Government manipulated the 'free' and 'independent' British press between 1937 and 1940. It tells the story of a hitherto ne glected aspect of Neville Chamberlain's ill-fated search for a 'rapproachement' with Nazi Germany and Italy, namely his assiduous and largely successful attempts to curb the hostility of the British press towards the Fascist states and enlist t h e n e wspapers as active supporters in his policy of appeasement. Soon after coming to power in May 1937, Chamberlain learnt that Hitler regarded a 'tame' British press, free of adverse criticism of Germany, as an essential prerequisite to any a gr ee m en t between Germany and Britain; and for the next three years Chamberlain and his entourage at Downing Street set out to comply with Hitler's wishes - aided and abetted by the press barons. Chamberlain used a system of personal contacts to cu rb th e p re ss, fully documented here for the first time, and he also relied heavily on the 'lobby' system of non-attributable political reporting to completely mislead the British people about the state of European affairs.
