"In the cities of the Ruhr great piles of rubble blocked the streets; twisted lamp standards stood silhouetted grotesquely against a sky still heavy with smoke, Despite the brave spring sunshine, the Ruhr presented a picture of complete, utter collapse unknown anywhere in Western Europe. 2 Whiting, Charles. FINALE AT FLENSBURG: THE STORY OF FIELD MARSHAL MONTGOMERY'S BATTLE FOR THE BALTIC.
Leo Cooper, London, (1973), first edition.
178 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. ISBN 0850521343 "...Charles Whiting tells in this book of Field-Marshal Montgomery's race to the Baltic. He sets the final stage of the battle with the Germans against the background of the battle between Churchill and Truman, a battle in which the stature, the rhetoric, the persuasion, even the invective of the Great Man were to prove of no avail. Eisenhower and Marshall won the day and the Iron Curtain fell a l o n g the frontiers from which it has never risen. While Statesmen and Supreme Commanders exchanged telegrams, lesser mortals kept up the exchange of fire as German armed resistance degenerated into the hands of the aged and the beardless. M r W hi ti ng v i vidly portrays the final collapse of the German army, their manic dread of the Russians and the dissolution of the German High Command as the puppets of the Third Reich frantically tried to escape from the debacle. The Finale was a t F len sbu rg but c ould it not have been much further to the East? In compelling yet historically well-researched terms Charles Whiting provokes many questions which scholastic verbiage and diplomatic niceties have hitherto occluded from the pub lic gaze ..." F aint er ased pencil marks at top of free front endpaper and top of contents page, very small bump to corners of front board, boards slight curled, minor soiling to top of textblock, light wrinkling to top/bottom of spine. Dus t ja cket is p rice clip ped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, creases at bottom of front panel, light rubbing soiling. VG-/G+

3 Whiting, Charles. FINALE AT FLENSBURG: THE STORY OF FIELD-MARSHAL MONTGOMERY'S BATTLE FOR THE BALTIC.
Corgi, London, 1973.
174 pp, mass market paperback. ISBN 0552092606 B&w photographs, map. "It was a great battle - perhaps the last great battle to be fought by the British Army. A whole German army surrendered and this led to the complete breakdown of the entire en emy defence facing the Westen Allies. But it was a political battle too - one not only designed to beat the German enemy, but also a new enemy from the East - the erstwhile Russian ally. Its aim was to break through the German defences on t h e R i v e r Elbe so that Montgomery's men could fight their way to the Baltic coast and thus prevent the advancing Russians from moving westwards into north-west Europe. In the end, the plan was a failure, and the thousands of British soldiers w ho h a d sl og ge d the hard, bitter road back from Dunkirk to Lubeck five years later, found that their victory was a hollow one...." Interior - light browning to pages, light foxing on inside of covers and on first page, book slightly cracked a t p age s 66 /67 . Ext erior - browning and tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, one crease on spine, light wear/scuff at bottom edge of front cover. VG-

4 Whiting, Charles. THE LAST ASSAULT: THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE REASSESSED.
Leo Cooper, London, (1994).
238 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, map. "It has generally been assumed by historians of the Second World War that the Americans were caught completely unawares by the last great German offensive - the drive into t he Ardennes in December, 1944, known as the Battle of the Bulge. But were they in fact caught unawares? In this remarkable reappraisal of those hectic days which preceded the last Christmas of the War, Charles Whiting argues that the answer i s v e r y probably that they were not...What is certain is that ever since the end of the Second World War the guardians of the files relating to the Battle of the Bulge in the United States have been most unwilling to permit any examination the r eo f - t hi s in spite of the Freedom of Information Act. So the author raises yet another question: 'Was somebody trying to cover something up and if so why?' On the basis of such information as he has been able to cull from those, as yet unso rt ed, f il es and o n information provided by the numerous survivors of the battle with whom he has been in contact, (the author) attempts to answer these questions..." 5 Whiting, Charles. THE THREE-STAR BLITZ: THE BAEDEKER RAIDS AND THE START OF TOTAL WAR 1942-1943.
Leo Cooper, London, 1987.
184 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 085052881X B&w photographs. "The German attempt to break the morale of the British by bombing London in 1940 did not succeed, so two years later, they switched their targets to the und efended cathedral cities of Exeter, Bath, York, Canterbury and Norwich, cities marked in Karl Baedeker's famous guidebook with three stars. Hence the name by which they came to be known. This time the British were not slow to retaliate and th e p u n ishment rained down upon the unfortunate people of Hamburg and Cologne surpassed in ferocity anything that had gone before. From now on the morale of the civil population came to be regarded as a legitimate target in the battle to break th e e ne my 's will. Charles Whiting describes in detail the Baedeker raids on the cathedral cities of England and the retaliatory raids on Germany, illustrating his story with the recollections of many of those who survived the raids. He analyses th e per son ali ties of the Top Brass on both sides who authorized the bombings and shows how the change in attitude to indiscriminate bombing gradually came about. It is a gruesome yet fascinating story, told with all the vividness which readers of Ch arle s Wh itin g's books will have come to expect." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good+
