Messenger, Charles. THE ART OF BLITZKRIEG. SECOND EDITION. Ian Allan, London, 1991, 2nd edition. 294 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711019118 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The term Blitzkrieg, or lightning war, was coined by the Germans, but has been part of the English language for the past 50 years. It r eflects the aim of armies throughout history to achieve quick and decisive victory. As this book describes, Blitzkrieg originated in the deadlock of trench warfare on the Western Front 1915-17 and the efforts by both sides to break it. The i n t e r n a l combustion engine, both in the air and on the ground, provided the means and fast moving mechanised forces closely supported by air power were the result. Theory and experimentation in the 1920s and 1930s gave way to the Blitzkrieg ca mp ai gn s of 1 939-42, which left Germany master of Continental Europe and much of western Russia. The Allies eventually found the antidote and applied the concept themselves during the latter part of the war. Since then Blitzkrieg has been a t t he for efr on t o f I sraeli strategy and dominated both Soviet and Western military thought on conventional operations during the Cold War years. Today it provides the background to conventional arms control....This new edition has been signif ican tly exp ande d a nd b roug ht up to date in order to provide an even more comprehensive account of this phenomenon of 20th century warfare." Faint cigarette odor, slight bump to bottom corner of each board. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top o f spi ne a nd at bott om o f fla p-fol ds, minor browning to top edge of flaps.
