1 Wren, Percival Christopher (P.C.) FLAWED BLADES: TALES FROM THE FOREIGN LEGION.
John Murray, London, 1933, first edition.
379 pp + ads, small 8vo (7 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This is a collection of short stories told by soldiers of the French Foreign Legion about themselves or their comrades. Very many of these men are examples of the 'flawed blades' that have snapped, leaving little but the sheath that once contained the sword - spirits that have broken, leaving only the weary body. The French Foreign Legion has been called 'the Cemetery of the Living', and practically every man in it has a ' s t o r y ' (apart from the usually thrilling story of his life in the Legion itself) - the story of what found out the flaw that caused the blade to snap beneath the strain, leaving the mere sheath intact. Each tale is a human document - thrill i ng , dr am at ic and real - and rarely devoid of touches of the macabre grim humour of the Legion." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, very light browning to page margins and to endpapers, small tear at top of gutter of page114, sc at ter ed li ght fo xin g marks mainly in margins of pages 220 & 221 - some lighter foxing on adjacent pages, small foxing mark at top of pages 258 & 259, tiny to very small holes on edges of spine/hinges due to insect damage, browning and tiny fo xin g ma rks on edge s of tex tblock, three small light stains on fore-edge of textblock - migrates into marginn of some pages, one tiny corner bump, slight browning to edges of boards.
