276 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w drawings + 2 colour plates. VOLUME II ONLY. "(D)eals with the uniforms of the armies of George I and II up to 1760. Not only are there drawings of the type s of various units of cavalry and infantry, but charts are given showing the regiments composing the armies of 1742 and 1750, with their distinctive lace patterns, facings, etc. The housings of the cavalry are also represented besides being d e s c r i b ed in the Royal Warrant of the time. A description is given of the regiments raised for the '45. A section is devoted to saddlery, with sketches of bits, bridles, etc. The influence of the early colonial wars on military dress is exem pl if ie d in t he description of the Light infantry companies formed during the campaigns in America. Fresh details of the independent companies later to be regimented as the Black Watch appear in the section on Scottish Regiments, which also dea ls wit h t he un ifo rms and colours of regiments serving in the French and Dutch armies. The Royal Engineers have their own section and their first uniform on becoming part of the Regular Army is given. The part played by the sutleress in the ar mie s of the ti me a nd t he probable origin of the gay dress adopted by 'vivandieres' of later years is described and illustrated by eighteenth century pictures. A section is devoted to an outline of the Haoverian regiments. Notes on saluting a nd c eremo nial, wit h app endic es of clothing warrants, inspection returns of general officers, etc., conclude the volume."
